I Always Feel Like ... Somebody's Watchin' Me

Do you own a video-monitor? These are usually called "infant video monitors" but after our Triad Moms on Main team meeting the other month I came to find out that they should be called "child monitors!" One of my team members even made fun of herself and said that her mother often asks her, "Are you planning to watch these kids on a video until they head off to college?"

I personally never owned one of these devices. My children are nine and seven years old, so when they were born I think these monitors were slowly coming onto the scene. Knowing my personality, this would have been a disaster. I knew I didn't need anything that I would be carrying around with me all hours of the day, turning on and off and checking to see if my baby was moving or not moving.

If you are currently expecting, most people give these a big thumbs up. It's an easy way to check on your child without needing to step into their bedroom and potentially wake them up. If you have owned one, please share the brands you liked best and why. In addition, if there are any readers out there who do not recommend certain video monitors, please tell us why so we can help educate the new moms and help them determine that will best work for them.

I also wanted to ask readers who own one of these how long you kept it in your child's room. As I mentioned earlier, I have talked to some people who still have it in the room of their six year old and it has proven to be beneficial when they check to see if the child is napping as he is supposed to be, or if he is climbing on furniture around the room! When do you think a child is too old to have this in his/her room?

Lastly, I would also love for you to share some of the things you have witnessed while watching your children on the video monitor! I am sure there are a few great stories out there of what these kids do when they think no one is watching. Ahhh, if they only knew.

GUILTY! My daughter is six years old and I still have the video monitor set up in her bedroom. I usually just turn it on when I want to see if she has woken up yet or fallen asleep. I guess I am trying to make sure she gets the appropriate amount of sleep but now that I am writing this I am realizing it is a little ridiculous. The kid is in first grade now and I think she is fine! I am happy to see that other moms do the same thing but maybe it is time for me to close up shop on the monitor!

We bought the Motorola Digital Video Monitor with Color Screen and Wireless Camera. We have been very happy with it so far. Our baby is only six months but we have not had any problems with it. I will be curious to see how long we use ours based on others' experiences.

We purchased a Foscam surveillance camera when our second son was born 2 years ago. Because it is not specifically for babies, more for security, you can save a little money. It is black and white (with night vision) and can be viewed and controlled to move vertically and horizontally from my iPhone! I love knowing if he's awake or asleep and that he is safe, even if he cries.
We had a similar camera for my oldest son, which we removed when we were sure he was staying in his big bed at night. Much past that age, I worried I might see more than I'd like to see in a young boy's room. : /
I highly suggest the use of a camera for new babies. It puts my mind at ease and keeps me from peeking in. I like being able to check my iPhone to be sure the sitter was able to get him settled without calling!

I used to think they were crazy, but my daughter started climbing out of her crib at 26 months, and we moved her to a mattress on the floor. I didn't like not being able to see what she was doing and if she was sleeping or not at nap time or bed time, so I quickly changed my tune and went out and bought one.

I recommend the Summer brand...it's easy and very travel durable (no iPhone connection though!) I too never thought I would have one of these. But when my 3rd child was 3 mos there was a SIDS death in our area and I got a little paranoid. I slept so much better just taking a quick peak at her. Otherwise I use it just like an audio monitor. It has come in very handy to SEE her though. Sometimes she (now 21 mos) cries out during naps or at night but we have learned if she us still lying down, she will go back to sleep. She is also in the naked stage (!) so she takes off all her clothes before falling asleep. I can use the monitor to make sure her diaper is still on! We witness lots if dancing and antics before naps that crack us up. One feature I have not used is the intercom-you can talk to the child through it! My friend with older boys who share a room uses it to tell them to settle down!! Love it, highly recommend it!
