Welcome to another edition of Main Street Moms on the Move!  We love to profile moms in the Triad who are movers and shakers.  If you know a mom who is making a difference in her own life, the lives or others, or in her own family … we want to know about her!  Please email me at Rachel@TriadMomsonMain.com to nominate a mom on the move.

Today we have three moms who all happen to be “Mompreneurs,” which means they have started their own businesses.  In addition, they are always on the move with their number one job – that of being a mom!

Miriam Bradley

Miriam moved to Greensboro 5 years ago from the Washington, DC area with her husband and one-year-old son.  She was a music major in college focused on performance, but had no idea that she would step into the fascinating world of early childhood musiceducation. Miriam has become very passionate about giving children an early musical start and began her own studio, Gate City Musikgarten.  She has progressed from having the classes in her home, at Peaceful Beginnings, and the YMCAs, now to a wonderful space at the Music Academy of North Carolina, off Wendover and Battleground in Greensboro.  Her program now has 70 students and four teachers!  A new session of Gate City Musikgarten classes for babies through age 6 is about to begin in mid-February, so please check them out at www.musikgarten.org/gatecity!  When children are given a chance to learn and enjoy music from an early age, they will create pathways in the brain that help them with critical thinking, social and emotional learning, and acute listening abilities, not to mention communication!  Miriam’s hope is for all families is that we will share music-making experiences through the years as the children mature and that this will be a bonding experience for all of us ~ as well as an educational and cultural one.

Rachel Kaplan Folds

Baking cookies has been a major hobby of Rachel’s since she was a little girl learning about the ins and outs of the kitchen from her mother. She built on this foundation in college by studying nutrition and business, and continued to experiment in her own kitchen. By the summer of 2004 she was developing a healthy cookie recipe that tasted indulgent. Her goal, which she achieved, was to include whole grains, as well as organic and local ingredients, and to exclude trans fats, cholesterol, and refined grains.  As the mother of two boys, now ages 11 and 8, she wanted a snack she could feel good about giving her children. After years of treating her family and friends to these nutritional, irresistible treats, she decided to use her business background to start Hello Cookie Company. She not only offers to bake you a fresh batch of cookies to enjoy, but as former teacher she is ready to be invited to your child’s birthday party to bake with, and entertain your guests, and send them home with a goodie bag that you can feel good about. Rachel also gave away batches of these cookies to three lucky readers on our Facebook page recently!  It is Rachel’s hope that as the business develops she will be able to use profits from the company to support local causes that are close to her heart such as the OftenAwesome.org.  You can check out Hello Cookie Company on facebook here!

Melissa Asbury

Melissa has a wonderful hubby of almost five years and two children, Addison (3) and Lucas(will be 2 tomorrow!). Melissa and her husband are currently building a house in Kernersville. She is a full time stay-at-home mommy and the owner & artisan of Monkey Toe Designs custom knits for kids. While Melissa was pregnant with her son, she taught herself how to knit and was able to start her Monkey Toe Designs business shortly after the birth of her son.  Monkey Toe Designs is an adorable line of clothing and fun accessories that you will absolutely fall in love with!  I ordered a pair of crochet flip-flops last year as a baby gift.  Yes – crochet flip-flops!  They were simply adorable.  You can see many of the products here on Etsy.  You can also become a fan of Melissa’s facebook page here, and will be able to see all her latest items for sale.  In her spare time, this mom on the move enjoys personal knitting/crochet, shopping, decorating and spending time with her family.
