In today’s world, educational choices are almost overwhelming for parents. Making the right choice can be challenging, but investigating the choices carefully can ensure that your child has a good start in their long education career.

So what should a parent consider when looking at schools?

Look beyond labels. “There are terrific and lousy schools in the private, public and charter school sections so relying on labels alone is a big risk,” says Andrew J. Rothman, who writes an educational blog for Time.com. As other parents whose opinions you respect for their recommendations. Look at school websites and Facebook pages for a glimpse of daily life at schools. Our Lady of Grace School regularly updates our Facebook page and website to give current and prospective parents views of our dynamic daily schedule.

Visit during the school day. A good school will open its doors to prospective parents so they can get a feel for daily life at the school. Take advantage of opportunities like these to see what goes on in a given classroom. Are students engaged? Are small groups on task? Is the classroom some place in which you would want to spend time?

Think about the community. When considering a school look at the community as a whole. Does the school see parents as co-teachers? Do they work to foster open communication with parents and teachers so they can work as a team to educate students? OLG offers teacher websites, a weekly e-newsletter, and parent volunteers in the classrooms to involve parents in their student’s education as much as possible.

Our Lady of Grace Catholic School will host an Open House (pre-K to 8th grade) on January 14th at 9:30 a.m. and a middle school open house on February 20th at 6:30 p.m. OLG is located in the heart of Greensboro’s historic Sunset Hills and serves students in pre-k to 8th grade. All faiths are welcome. Visit www.olgsch.org or on Facebook. Phone: (336) 275-1522.

Take the time to look at your options and find a school that will help your child reach their full-potential. It’s an investment of time that you won’t regret!
