I am pregnant with baby #3 due in May. By the time you all read this, I will have found out if the baby growing inside me is a boy or a girl. Of course, I just want a healthy, happy baby, but the wait to find out what has me taking 100 trips to the bathroom at night, causing me heartburn, and making me smile as I start to feel the kicks and jabs, has been nagging at me!

I am a planner. I want to pick out the furniture, clothes, and names. Do I need to buy a whole new wardrobe for the little guy or can I take out my girls’ old clothes in the attic and start washing them with the delicious smell of baby detergent? I feel like I bond better with the growing fetus when I know the gender. But not everyone likes to know ahead of time and I respect that choice too. As my cousin says, “There are very few surprises in life and this is one of them!” I can get behind that, but to me it is just as much a surprise when the ultrasound tech tells you around 20 weeks as it is when the doctor tells you in the delivery room. We are lucky to live now when we have the technology to make that choice.

Wives tales are just for fun and while I know that, I can’t stop reading about them. It’s like a gossip magazine. Some of the articles may not be true, but it’s still fun to read! Here are some of my favorites...

~ If you’re carrying low, it’s a boy and high it’s a girl.

~ Do you have acne?< Then the girl inside of you is stealing your beauty.

~ Dry hands and cold feet? Oh BOY!

~ If the heart rate is under 140, you’re having a boy and if it’s over then you’re having a girl. (I asked my ultrasound tech about this one and she said that the heart rate is dependent on how active the baby is right before they check the heart rate). That makes sense to me.

~ If you are craving sweets, then it’s a girl! If you’re craving salty and sour, it’s a boy!

~ Have you tried the Chinese predictor charts? Click here for an example of one.

~ If your hubby has been partaking in the cravings and has packed on some extra weight, too, you’re having a girl.

~ If someone places a key in front of you and you grab it by the narrow part, you’re having a girl. If you hold it by the wider part, you’re having a boy.

Some of these tell me I’m having a boy, and some of these tell me I’m having a girl. I know there are more wives tales out there that I didn’t share. If you have any that were true with you, please post! Do you find out the sex of your baby ahead of time? If so, why? If not, why?

We have 3 girls - didn't find out ahead of time with the first two, but we did with the third so we could prepare better and help the other kids prepare better. I carried all of them low - especially the first- so that one didn't work. Also, with the third, I craved meat - wanted steak, cheeseburgers, beef stew - and I am not typically a big red meat eater. I was told that meant it was a boy which, of course, turned out to be wrong.

When I was about 7 months pregnant with my son I was working at Ann Taylor Loft. This lady came in and immediately put her hands on my belly and told me she was some sort of nurse or doula (I can't remember). She said that by the way I was carrying she knew I was having a girl. She went on and on about my little girl. I didn't have the heart to tell her that I had already had an ultrasound & knew it was a boy!

I found out I'm having a BOY!!!! So I'll have two girls and a boy. Wives tales are definitely not 100% telling, but still fun to read and think about!

Woohoo Dani!!! So happy for you and the energy level that will soon inhabit your house!!! Oh, I can't wait to meet him! Congratulations! Love this blog BTW. Both of my kids were 50/50 all the way throough on all of the wives tales! And, Rachel, you are too kind!

I am such a planner I have to find out with my pregnancies. Had 2 girls, pregnant with 3rd and sure it was a girl but I was wrong. Having a little boy in April. Most of the wives' tales were wrong about all 3! Congrats!

Congratulations Dani - I had not heard the news! And a boy - yay! Not sure what the wives tales say if you are having multiples but I ended up with 2 boys and a girl. The doctors were correct in predicting their genders and I believe it was mostly from monitoring their heart rates. Whether the wives tales are correct or not, all babies are a blessing!
