DRA & Cesarean Scar Screening

What

Diastasis Rectus Abdominus (DRA) is a separation of the abdominal wall muscles that can occur during pregnancy, a vaginal birth, or when there is increased pressure in the abdomen (heavy lifting or chronic constipation for example).

Cesarean scar and adhesions occur when a baby is born via cesarean birth. ALL women that have a cesarean birth have this. The incision affects the muscle and connective tissue in the abdominal wall often creating issues with lumbar mobility, posture, core strength, and can be painful for some women.

Why

It important to be screened to see if you have DRA? It is also important to screen to see if your c-section scar is healing well.

First off, many women don’t even know what diastasis is or that there is a provider that can help with c-section scar healing! It is very common and can affect your ability to use your core with everyday activities. Women with DRA can also experience abdominal doming, sensations of core weakness, and low back pain. This is a very treatable condition and the first step is to know whether you have it or not.

If you had a cesarean birth and are having discomfort in your incision area (numbness, pain, sensitivity) or feel tightness in your lower abdomen or hip flexor area, there is likely some form of adhesion causing those issues. It is never too late to see improvement in these things. Again, the first step is getting screened for it!
