Today’s edition of Main Street Moms on the Move features three local moms including a “cake lady” who truly bakes from the heart, a “mom whisperer” whose story will inspire you, and one of our own amazing team members here at TMoM whose energy and spunk are such a welcome addition to our family. So much talent in one place today!

We are excited to introduce you to these fabulous women. To nominate a local “Mom on the Move” email Rachel@triadmomsonmain.com.

Melissa Diamond

1-IMG_0782Throughout her childhood in Greensboro, Melissa enjoyed baking cakes on special occasions with her mom who often allowed her to have free reign over the design. This meant lots of experimenting, lots of messes, and lots of brightly colored batter and frosting! “Don’t get me wrong”, Melissa explains, “I wasn’t very good, but I loved every minute of it!”

Fast forward to adulthood and Melissa was married to husband Patrick, and trying to come up with a way to work from home so that she could spend more time with her daughters, Camille & Gracie.

Melissa remembered her favorite “cake lady” who had moved away from NC a few years prior and called her for advice. Soon after, she left her job, signed up for a beginner cake decorating class and the rest is history! She ran a busy cake business from home for five years until one day she decided to embark on a new chapter. She wanted to help others through her love of cake decorating by teaching, and the idea of MyCakeSchool.com was born!

These days, MyCakeSchool.com is a family affair. Over the past six years, Melissa and her mom, Lynda, have created hundreds of baking & decorating video tutorials and recipes for thousands of cake decorators, hobbyists, and aspiring business owners near and far.

“This business means a lot of long hours, but it is so worth it. I’m grateful to be able to do something that I love, and to pass on everything that I’ve learned. I’ve made wonderful friends along the way, and wouldn’t change a thing! Whether my daughters decide to continue in the family business one day or not, I hope that I’ve taught them to follow their heart and to find something that they truly love to do!”

Vikki Spencer

IMG_9673Vikki Spencer is a single mom of Jordan, 18 and owner of Banjo. Although she grew up in CT, she lived in the Triad since she had her son (except for 2 years when she lived in the Midwest, falling in love with big sky country). She was a former high school English teacher before having her son.

When Jordan was 6 years old, Vikki went to work as an on-air radio co-host at WBFJ in Winston Salem. However, Jordan was soon after diagnosed with OCD and Tourette’s tics. After a year of trying to juggle both, Vikki quit to homeschool second grade and rebuild life from the ground up to help Jordan heal. After a year, Jordan went back to school and his symptoms have been minimal ever since.

Through that season, Vikki wanted a mom whisperer – someone who could help her uncover her strengths and gifts so she could give well to her family. She wanted to learn how to create meaningful family life without copying what everyone else was doing- with balance, wisdom and love. Over the course of years, she now is that for moms, through her website www.TheMomWhisperer.com where she works full time.

She also has a book on Amazon, Momifesto: 9 Practices for Phenomenal Moms. And she teaches her book at The Summit Church in Kernersville. I encourage you to watch her video here to smile, laugh and cry all within 3 minutes.

“Usually moms find me because they are struggling with family balance, parenting, and anger. In a short amount of time, we are getting to the root of issues and able to allow her to clearly carve a path for her family that makes sense. I never have an agenda for what a mom should do or be. I create a safe place where she can explore her options, ask me questions if she’s missing information, and create a plan to move forward. It’s incredibly magical work and I’m always flattened at how fast moms make changes.”

In her spare time, Vikki hikes the trails and the waterfalls at Hanging Rock, serves at church, discovers small towns, and loves learning about health, meditation and energy work. She is also an avid traveler, her most recent jaunt was Italy with Jordan, each carrying only a carry on.

Heather Keenan

DSC_0524 (2)We are back with another Triad Moms on Main team member.  Please give a warm round of applause for Heather Keenan!

Heather is the proud mom of three awesome girls, ages 6, 4, and 2.  She is originally from Fredericksburg, Virginia and makes it back there to visit as often as she can.  Her husband’s job relocated them to the Triad area about five years ago and while she loves North Carolina, she is still a Virginia girl at heart!  Her in-laws live in Northern Ireland and she has been lucky enough to get her first and middle daughter over to visit them in years past, what an adventure!

Heather is involved with volunteering at her children’s schools as well as an active member at her community YMCA, where all of her children participate in various sports.  One of her favorite things about living in the Triad is having access to both the amazing beaches of NC and the beautiful mountains.  “All you have to do is pick a direction and drive!”  Another great thing about this area, she adds, is the amount of Farmer’s Markets that are available.  Who doesn’t love fresh food?!

Heather is super happy to be back in the work force after staying home for years to raise her girls.  She feels lucky to have met such a great team at Triad Moms on Main, and loves the fact that while she has returned to work, part time, she is able to do so on her own schedule and still be there to feed her monsters their after school snacks.  “I am happy to be able to have something that I am working on be completed.  It is nice to finalize a sale, because the dishes and laundry at home are never finalized!”
