By Guest Blogger Karen L. Smith, PT, MS with Peace Physical Therapy LLC

As a mother of three, I am so happy that the word is getting out there about the benefits of pelvic floor therapy. When I had my children, pelvic health wasn’t really talked about or offered as an option for most moms. As I entered the field of pelvic health physical therapy, I realized what a game-changer it is for women. But as I spoke with my patients (both men and women), I heard a few things quite frequently.

“I have been constipated since I was a kid.”

“It’s always a strain for me to have a bowel movement.”

“I have had this bladder pain since I was a teenager.”

Establishing Good Habits

I soon realized that someone needed to help kids! If we can help children learn good habits now then they could avoid years of discomfort, as well as set our daughters up for healthier labors and deliveries in the future. Many children have bowel and/or bladder issues for years and parents don’t feel heard when they bring up their concerns.

Does Your Child Need Pelvic Floor Therapy?

How do you know if your child could benefit from a Pediatric Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy assessment? Look for these signs…

  • Withholding their BMs
  • Poop leaks or smears in their underwear (not due to poor wiping)
  • Wetting the bed over the age of 6
  • Daytime urinary leaks
  • Leaking urine when they play sports
  • A medical diagnosis that affects their bowel or bladder
  • Bladder pain when they eat or drink certain foods
  • BMs that clog the toilet
  • Hard and painful BMs with straining

Any of these would be signs to reach out to Peace Physical Therapy LLC. Call us to see how we can help bring peace to toileting in your life.
