New! Sportsology Exhibit

The Sportsology exhibit opens June 1 and runs through the end of August. Composed of a series of hands-on challenges, Sportsology allows visitors to test their athletic abilities while learning how their bodies work. Kids and adults will have the opportunity to learn the physics behind a curve ball, find out if they can jump as high as a pro basketball player and test the strength of their arms in wheelchair races.

Exhibit features include:
Hang Time – Grab onto a bar and test your endurance!
Get a Grip – A true strength test — how strong is that firm handshake?
Action Reaction – Can you be a great soccer goalie? Test your reaction time.
Vertical Leap – Compare how high you can jump to three professional basketball players.
Fast Ball – Throw the ball at a target and see just how fast you can pitch.
Wheel Chair Racers – Race a friend and find out how fast you can go just using your arms.
Flex-Ability – Learn how much stretch you really have.

You can challenge yourself and each other with activities focused on strength, skill, endurance and other important elements of sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, football and tennis. The exhibit also celebrates the value of fitness and exercise and the lifelong process of learning to use physical and intellectual strength in ways that are enjoyable and rewarding.

Innovative Programs and Events

There are several exciting programs happening at SciWorks this summer. Here are just a few:

Adopt-a-Butterfly
In conjunction with the SciWorks Where Innovation Begins Dinner, Presentation & Auction, the science center is offering an Adopt-a-Butterfly program. Learn about metamorphosis and migration, as well as commemorate a birthday or other special occasion. For just $25, you can adopt a butterfly and release it on Sunday, Sept. 22, so it can begin its migration to Mexico. Your butterfly will be tagged with a unique number from Monarch Watch, and you’ll receive an adoption certificate listing the tag number, as well as an “I Adopted a Butterfly at SciWorks” magnet for your car. If your butterfly is recovered in Mexico or somewhere else along the way, you’ll receive information about its journey!

Bird Bonanza on Sunday, June 2, 1-4 p.m.
Meet feathered friends, including a variety of chicken breeds and some adorable chicks.  Find out when to help baby birdsand when to leave them alone. Buy and assemble a bluebird house (while supplies last), and enjoy fun games and crafts.

Family Friday Night, June 14, 4-8 p.m.
Bring a picnic and enjoy the museum, outdoor parks and planetarium for only $3 per person. (Kids under 4 and members get in free!)

Summer Family Memberships
This is a new membership option which allows families to enjoy the museum all summer long for only $65.

Birthday Parties
Looking for a fun indoor/outdoor space for a summer party? SciWorks offers four themed Birthday Party Packages: Bug Bash, Dinosaurs, Farm Friends and Super Space.  Don’t forget to visit our new baby goats, Newton and Darwin, in the barnyard!

Winston-Salem Open Day on Sunday, July 28
“Bo” the Tennis Ball mascot will make an appearance, and SciWorks’ visitors will have the opportunity to play some tennis on a “short court,” win tickets to the W-S Open and participate in other tennis-themed activities.
