Victory Junction was founded in 2004 by Kyle and Pattie Petty in honor of their late son Adam, who believed from a young age that every child deserves the opportunity to celebrate being a kid.

The year-round camp serves children ages six to 16 with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses and focuses on providing memorable and empowering minutes, hours, days and weeks for every child.

The cost to send one child to camp for one week is $2,500 but the camper’s family never incurs a cost for their experience. Victory Junction relies solely on the generous donations from individuals, corporations and organizations to give children a once in a lifetime camping experience.

Offering programs for a range of disease groups, Victory Junction also maintains strong relationships with more than 30 partner hospitals. Since opening in 2004, Victory Junction has enriched the lives of 15,443 children and family members and welcomed children from 50 states and four countries.

“We tell people that visit Victory Junction that you’ll feel your heart race when you come through the gates of camp, “said Kyle Petty, co-founder of Victory Junction. “It’s a place where these kids find freedom, friendship and just plain fun. Our goal each year is simple…to send as many kids to camp as possible.”

Victory Junction is a place that allows a child the opportunity to be like someone else and to share in similar experiences – bonding, sometimes for the first time, with individuals just like them. It’s a place that makes your heart race.

“My daughter has been through several surgeries/procedures and often feels different from other kids her age because of these experiences. For the first time in her life she felt “normal” amongst other children who have struggled medically. We will remember the kind words, big smiles, and compassionate spirits of everyone at VJGC for the rest of our lives.

“Most families who have children with disabilities put on a mask to appear normal. The truth is we are living lives with a social, mental, and financial strain each and every day that is nearly impossible to describe. Often times we are holding on by a thread, living 10 feet under water, and coming up for a gasping breath to survive when we can. Victory Junction strengthens that thread and gives us a weekend of walking on land and breathing like a normal family.”

In my “previous life”, I was involved with medical student education and development and I’m well aware of the debate concerning whether or not one can be taught the skills of empathy and compassion. One needs to look no further than Victory Junction to know that those skills belong innately within its counselors. These men and women don’t have to learn it — they live it with these campers. Each is perfectly suited for the helping professions.
