LEAD Girls of NC 2024 Girls Rising EXPO: Author Zaila Avant-garde

The community is invited to join LEAD Girls of NC for this special event with Zaila Avant-garde as we kick off our 6th Annual LEAD Girls of NC Girls Rising EXPO.

Zaila will discuss her new book, It’s Not Bragging If It’s True: How to Be Awesome at Life. Admission is free, but registration is required to attend. About the Executive Director
Joy holds a B.A. from Salem College and is a certified Life Coach through an ICF (International Coach Federation)-recognized institution. Joy’s ‘why’ in life is: “impact every girl that comes in her life in some way.” Joy feels it’s our responsibility to be the change we want to see in our community, not just talk about it. She is active in the community and serves on the boards and leadership committees of The Women’s Fund of Winston-Salem, Carolina Core FC Academy, and Winston-Salem Fashion Week.

About the Author
Hailing from New Orleans, Louisiana, Avant-garde won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee, making her the first African-American to win in almost 100 years of the competition. Along with competing in spelling bees for two years, Avant-garde holds two Guinness World Records for her basketball prowess. She holds the records for the most bounce juggles in one minute (four basketballs) and most basketballs dribbled simultaneously by one person (six basketballs). She was also named SportsKid of the Year 2021 by Sports Illustrated Kids. Zaila, age 18, is a recent high school graduate with multiple scholarship offers.

“It’s Not Bragging if It’s True” is a New York Times Bestseller published in May of 2023. This empowering collection of true stories from Zaila aims to inspire kids to embrace their unique qualities and persevere through life’s challenges.

In this nonfiction book, Zaila shares the personal anecdotes that have shaped her life and extends advice to readers on living authentically. While Zaila is an exceptional and inspiring young woman, she has fears and anxieties just like everyone else; what makes her remarkable is the way she chooses to move through the obstacles in front of her.

Zaila shares about her family, her accomplishments, her experience of being homeschooled, and so much more in order to motivate and uplift other kids who have small-, medium-, and even big-sized dreams.
