Pilot Mountain, Hanging Rock & Mount Airy: The Complete Foothills Family Guide
Pilot Mountain, Hanging Rock, and Mount Airy sit within about 30-45 minutes of Winston-Salem and make up one of the best weekend-trip clusters in the Triad’s backyard — mountain views without the 3-hour drive, a proper swimming lake and waterfalls, and a slice of small-town Mayberry nostalgia. This page is the shortcut: figure out which guide fits your trip, then click through for the details.

Quick FAQ
Can we do more than one of these in a day? Pilot Mountain and Mount Airy are close enough to pair easily (JOLO Winery sits between them). Hanging Rock is a bit further out, so it’s usually its own trip unless you’re staying the weekend.
Is this a good trip for young kids? Yes — Little Pinnacle Overlook at Pilot Mountain and downtown Mount Airy are both easy, low-effort outings. Hanging Rock’s lake and easier trails work well too; save the 20+ miles of trails for older kids.
Best time of year to go? Spring and fall for hiking (mild temps, and Pilot Mountain’s overlooks are a great leaf-peeping spot in October). Summer adds Hanging Rock’s lake into the mix.
