US National Whitewater Center | The Whitewater Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, is the largest outdoor center of its kind in the world.  Featuring the world’s largest manmade whitewater river and 1,300 acres of protected woodlands along the Catawba River, the Center has become the home of the active outdoor lifestyle.

DAYS OPEN & HOURS: Open Daily, generally 9 am–8 pm with certain attractions opening later.
ADMISSION: No admission fee is charged to enter the property, although there is a $13 parking fee. An activity pass is required for any activities on site, such as ice skating, climbing, Wildwoods, rafting, ropes courses, etc. A daily pass is $79/adult and single activity passes are $18-69 per activity.
WHAT TO EXPECT: There is plenty to do without even paying for an activity, as the trails are all fre,e and it’s free to roam the grounds and watch what is happening. Younger kids will love Wildwoods, the outdoor/nature-based play center. Be sure to check the calendar for activities available on the day you’ll visit and any other seasonal offerings.

NASCAR Hall of Fame | The NASCAR Hall of Fame is a fun and interactive spot where families can explore the exciting world of racing together. It includes hands-on exhibits, race simulators, pit crew challenges, and up-close looks at historic cars.

ADMISSION:
General admission for adults is $29 and $22 for children between 4-12. Additional combo tickets are available that give access to extra activities (range from $38-51).
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Generally, this is a better experience for kids ages 5+ as there are minimum height rules for activities, and younger kids won’t be as engaged with the educational/informational components. There is a gift shop and a cafe. Plan to spend 2-3 hours fully exploring.


ImaginOn (Free) | ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center is a one-of-a-kind youth destination located in Charlotte’s cultural arts district. This 102,000-square-foot facility recently ranked by Livability.com as the No. 1 children’s library in the United States.

ImaginOn features two state-of-the-art theatres, a dedicated library space for kids 11 and under, four multi-use classrooms, a teen-only library, a multimedia production studio, and an interactive exhibit space. 

Carolina Raptor Center | A nonprofit featuring a Raptor Trail, a small zoo highlighting birds of prey. There is also a Raptor Hospital where 800+ sick, injured, or orphaned raptors are treated each year.

DAYS OPEN & HOURS:
The Raptor Trail is open daily, 10 am-4 pm. Visitor programs like Keeper Chats, Meet a Raptor, and Fly-By’s are once a day between 11 am and 2:30 pm. See exact times here.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
An easy activity that feels like a nature walk with amazing up-close views of birds of prey. Expect educational signs, knowledgeable staff, and live programs that keep elementary-age kids engaged.

The MINT Museum | North Carolina’s first art museum, The MINT is a contemporary art museum that showcases international art exhibitions, interactive spaces, live performances, and educational programs for all ages.

Tuesday-Sunday, 11 am-6 pm (open until 9 pm on Wed & Fri). Closed on major holidays.

SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord | A small aquarium located in the popular Concord Mills Shopping Center.

ADMISSION: Tickets start at $19.99 for all ages and vary by date/time.
WHAT TO EXPECT: Small by most standards, and many families get through it in under an hour so consider if the experience is worth the price. It does have a cool underwater shark/fish tank, though!

Discovery Place Science | A science and technology museum with hands-on labs, interactive exhibits, and an IMAX dome theater.

Crowders Mountain State Park – Crowders Mountain State Park is closer to Gastonia, but is a fabulous spot for hiking, fishing, canoeing, and camping.

The Lazy 5 Ranch – This can be a day trip all it’s own. This animal park is located in Mooresville (north of Charlotte) and includes a day of fun on a wagon ride or driving through with your car.

Romare Bearden Park – Get the best view of the Charlotte skyline from this park uptown. You will almost always find music and events at this venue, and if not, the fountains and scenery will be enough to entertain you for a quick visit and possibly lunch outdoors! Kids love this spot.
