Topsail Beach & Surf City

Topsail Beach & Surf City

Topsail Island is 26 miles long and situated between the barrier islands of the Crystal Coast and the beaches of the Wilmington area. It includes North Topsail Beach, Surf City and Topsail Beach.

There are only two ways on and off the island: a high-rise bridge in Surf City and a high-rise bridge in North Topsail Beach.  If you want to get away for a day, the town is conveniently located between the cities of Wilmington and Jacksonville.

Topsail Beach and Surfside

TOPSAIL BEACH is the quieter, more low-key option and a favorite for families who want to truly unplug. The vibe here is peaceful and uncrowded, with wide, clean beaches, gentle waves, and plenty of space for kids to play without the chaos of larger resort towns. Topsail Beach is known for its “old-school beach town” feel—no big boardwalks or high-rise developments—just simple days spent shell hunting, spotting dolphins, and enjoying sunset walks together. It’s ideal for younger kids, multi-generational trips, or anyone prioritizing downtime, nature, and easy beach access right from your rental.

SURF CITY, just a short drive away, offers a bit more activity while still maintaining that relaxed Topsail charm. As the central hub of the island, it has more restaurants, shops, and family-friendly things to do—like parks, mini golf, events, and the iconic fishing pier. Surf City also makes beach days easy with dozens of public access points and amenities, which is especially convenient for families juggling gear and little ones. It strikes a great balance: enough to keep kids entertained, but still far less crowded and commercial than bigger beach destinations.

Our latest posts about Topsail Beach & Surf City

Since these two beach communities sit on the same island, there really is no reason to choose between them. You’ll be able to enjoy the dining, entertainment, and attractions anywhere on this barrier island. Here are some of our favorite places to stay, things to do, and places to eat on Topsail Island.

Top attractions on Topsail Island

The island is a quiet place, so most of the entertainment is focused on simply enjoying the beach. But if you need a break from the surf and the sand, then check out one of these destinations.

Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center

This is one of the island’s most beloved attractions, where kids can see real sea turtles being nursed back to health. The facility offers educational tours that explain the rescue process and the importance of ocean conservation. Children will love seeing the various species, from tiny hatchlings to large loggerheads, swimming in their therapy pools.

Soundside Park

Located right next to the Surf City Bridge, this park features a massive pirate-ship-themed playground that is perfect for burning off energy. The park also includes a boardwalk that winds through the marsh, offering great opportunities to spot crabs and local birds. It is a popular spot for family picnics and often hosts outdoor movies and community events during the summer months.

Missiles and More Museum

Housed in a historic building used during a secret post-WWII missile program, this museum offers fascinating exhibits on pirates, local history, and the island’s unique military past. It is highly engaging for school-aged children who enjoy learning about “Operation Bumblebee” or seeing the International Shell Exhibit. The museum provides a great indoor break from the sun while remaining very budget-friendly.

Patio Playground

Located in Topsail Beach, this retro-style entertainment center features a colorful 18-hole miniature golf course that is fun for all skill levels. In addition to golf, there is an indoor arcade and an ice cream shop serving local favorites. It is a classic beach-town staple that offers a laid-back, “unplugged” feel for a fun family night out.
