Visiting The Crystal Coast With Kids
If your family loves the beach but wants a relaxed vibe but in an easy-to-get-to location, then the Crystal Coast may be exactly what you’re looking for. Located along the Southern Outer Banks, this stretch of coastline includes more than 85 miles of beaches along with charming coastal towns, outdoor adventures, historic attractions and plenty of kid-friendly fun.
From calm, family-friendly beaches and wild horses to aquariums, historic villages and water sports for every age, the Crystal Coast offers a laid-back coastal experience that works especially well for families driving from the Triad.
Whether you’re planning a long summer vacation, a quick weekend getaway or a first beach trip with young kids, this guide will help you explore what makes the Crystal Coast such a great destination for Triad families.
What Beaches are part of the Crystal Coast?

The Crystal Coast is often called the Southern Outer Banks and stretches along North Carolina’s central coastline. It includes popular beach towns like Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, Pine Knoll Shores, and historic waterfront communities like Beaufort and Morehead City.
This region combines classic beach towns with quieter natural areas, including undeveloped shoreline, state parks, and coastal islands accessible only by boat.
For Triad families, it’s a manageable drive that feels far enough away to feel like a real vacation — but still easy enough for long weekends or quick summer trips.
One of the things that makes the Crystal Coast unique is that it isn’t just one beach — it’s a collection of small towns, each with its own personality.
Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle are popular for classic family beach vacations, while Pine Knoll Shores offers a quieter setting surrounded by nature. Beaufort is known for its historic charm and waterfront views, and Morehead City adds a more active coastal vibe with shopping, restaurants, and events.
Families who want something even quieter can explore smaller areas like Harkers Island, Indian Beach, and Cape Lookout, where undeveloped shoreline and natural beauty are the main attractions.
Atlantic Beach
🚗 DISTANCE FROM TRIAD: About 4 hours from most points in the Triad
📌 SUMMARY: Atlantic Beach is often the easiest “first choice” for families visiting the Crystal Coast. It’s one of the oldest resort towns in the area and is known for wide beaches, easy public access points, and plenty of things to do nearby.
• Feels lively but not overwhelming
• Close to restaurants and attractions
• Easy beach access
• Close to Fort Macon and The Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores
• More hotel-style accommodations vs. quiet house rentals
• Slightly busier than Pine Knoll Shores or Emerald Isle
🍴DINING:
The Shark Shack – casual seafood and burgers with outdoor seating (perfect after the beach)
Oceana Pier House – features fresh local seafood and family-friendly favorites made from scratch
Amos Mosquitos – a little upscale but still accommodating for families with their outdoor seating and winning kids menu
Pine Knoll Shores
🚗 DISTANCE FROM TRIAD: About 4 hours from most points in the Triad
📌 SUMMARY: Pine Knoll Shores is perfect for families who want a quieter beach trip. The official tourism site describes it as a peaceful stretch of coastline with wide beaches and accommodations tucked into natural areas.
• Much quieter than Atlantic Beach
• Close to the NC Aquarium (a huge hit with kids)
• More relaxed and nature-focused
• Feels calm and safe for younger kids
•Fewer restaurants within walking distance
• Less nightlife/entertainment (which some families love and others don’t)
🏨 STAY: Pine Knoll Shores is mostly made up of oceanfront condo complexes, vacation home rentals, and a few smaller hotels.
🍴DINING:
The Crab Shack – A family-owned business since 1976, run by commercial fishermen delivering the freshest seafood in town
Captain’s Kitchen – This food truck serves its fried seafood dishes all around the Crystal Coast
Big Oak Drive In & BBQ – Serving shrimpburgers, hamburgers, BBQ, hot dogs and more
Emerald Isle
🚗 DISTANCE FROM TRIAD: About 4 hours from most points in the Triad
📌 SUMMARY: Emerald Isle is one of the most popular Crystal Coast destinations for families and is known for 12 miles of shoreline and a relaxed, family-focused atmosphere.
- Wide beaches with lots of space
- Very family-oriented (less “party beach” vibe)
- Great for biking and walking
- Lots of vacation homes are perfect for week-long trips
- Best for families planning longer stays rather than quick overnights
🏨 STAY: If your family likes space (multiple bedrooms, a kitchen, and a quieter neighborhood feel), this is usually the best choice on the Crystal Coast. You’ll find beach house rentals, Airbnb-style family homes, and weekly summer rentals are your main options.
🍴DINING:
Surf’s Up Bar & Grill – Located at the Bogue Inlet Pier, it offers good food and great views
Trading Post – Outdoor seating and kid-friendly games make this one particularly appealing + they’re known for their shrimp-n-grits
Rucker Johns – Great waterfront outdoor dining, known for great burgers and hearty fries
Beaufort
🚗 DISTANCE FROM TRIAD: About 4.5 hours from most points in the Triad
📌 SUMMARY: Beaufort is completely different from the typical “beach town.” Instead of staying right on the ocean, you’ll be in one of the oldest towns in North Carolina, known for waterfront views, history, boat tours, and charming walkable streets.
• Walkable historic waterfront
• Great for dolphin tours and boat rides
• More unique than a typical beach vacation
• Perfect mix of beach & exploring
• A coastal community, but not located directly on the ocean
🏨 STAY: Many families stay in Beaufort and drive 10–15 minutes to the beach each day. You’ll find smaller boutique inns, vacation homes in the historic district, and Airbnb-style homes close to the waterfront.
🍴DINING:
Finz Grill & Marina – Located on Front Street with water views, serving burgers, wraps, seafood platters, and more
Clawsons – A historic location serving seafood favorites plus ribs, burgers, and more
No Name Pizza & Subs – When you need something other than seafood, this place offers pizza, subs, burgers, sandwiches and more
Morehead City
🚗 DISTANCE FROM TRIAD: About 4 hours from most points in the Triad
📌 SUMMARY: Morehead City is the largest town on the Crystal Coast and feels more like a small coastal city than a quiet beach town. The official tourism site highlights it as a hub for boating, dining, shopping, and events.
• Tons of affordable and casual restaurants
• Easy access to beaches and attractions
• Great base if you want options and affordability
• Less of a classic beach vacation feel since you’re farther away from the beaches and waterfront communities
🏨 STAY: Morehead City is ideal for families who want a central location for day trips around the Crystal Coast. You’ll find hotels instead of house rentals in this area.
🍴DINING:
Snapperz Grill & Steam Bar – Serving fresh, locally caught seafood and other family favorites
Social Q Smokehouse – High-quality and wood-smoked meats, it’s a celebration of barbecue flavors from all around the world
Mug Shot – An anti-coastal themed spot offering coffee, cocktails, and comfort-forward food with a twist
Family-Friendly Attractions at the Crystal Coast
One of the things that makes the Crystal Coast stand out is how much there is to do beyond the beach. Families can mix relaxing beach days with outdoor adventures, wildlife experiences, and a little bit of history along the way.
A must-visit for families is the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, where kids can see sharks, sea turtles, and touch-tank exhibits that make learning about marine life fun and hands-on. Another favorite is Cape Lookout National Seashore, known for its iconic lighthouse, wild horses and miles of undeveloped shoreline that feel completely different from a typical beach trip.
Families who enjoy history will also love exploring Beaufort, one of North Carolina’s oldest towns. The waterfront area is easy to walk with kids and offers boat tours, small shops and beautiful coastal views. If your family enjoys being active, the Crystal Coast also offers kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, dolphin-watching tours and plenty of opportunities to explore nature.
NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores
The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is one of the most popular kid-friendly attractions on the Crystal Coast and an easy “must-do” stop for families visiting Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, or Pine Knoll Shores.
The aquarium takes visitors on a “mountains to the sea” journey through North Carolina’s ecosystems — starting with freshwater habitats and ending with the open Atlantic. Families can see river otters, sea turtles, sharks, stingrays and hundreds of coastal species that kids often never get to see up close in the wild.
It originally opened in 1976 and was expanded and reopened in 2006, and today it’s one of the state’s accredited aquariums focused on education, conservation, and hands-on learning for kids.
Fort Macon State Park
Located in Carteret County and at the northernmost point of Atlantic Beach, Fort Macon State Park is centered on an impeccably restored pre-Civil War fort that offers daily guided tours and frequent cannon and musket demonstrations.
Extensive exhibits educate visitors on fort history and the natural surroundings. The beach is perfect for swimming, beachcombing, or even spotting a dolphin or two. Trails traverse the salt marsh and dune fields and provide the opportunity to see one of the 300-plus species of birds found in the park.
Atlantic Beach Town Park
Located at 915 W Fort Macon Road, the AB Town Park features a splash pad, large skatepark, 18-hole mini-golf course, half-court basketball court, Gaga Ball court, picnic shelter, concession stand, & public restrooms.
The Town Park includes an 18-hole mini-golf course with a concession stand and restroom facilities. The mini-golf course and concession stand are open daily during the summer, with mini-golf costing only $6 per person (age 6 and under free!) – the best family-friendly rates on the island! Cash and credit cards are accepted.
Cape Lookout National Seashore
Cape Lookout is one of the few remaining natural barrier island chains in the world and is only accessible by boat (local ferry services offered). Those seeking the freedom to experience complete solitude and an opportunity to discover endangered animals in their natural habitats can also explore the beach to find a multitude of large, unbroken conch shells.
Facilities are extremely limited. The visitor center is on Harkers Island, and limited restrooms are available on the islands, but visitors should bring all necessary food, water, and supplies.
Popular activities include touring the historic Portsmouth Village, camping, birdwatching, and watching the wild horses on Shackleford Banks.
Day Trips Within (and from) the Crystal Coast
Another reason families love the Crystal Coast is how easy it is to turn a beach trip into a full adventure. There are several fun day-trip options both within the area and just a short drive away.
Within the Crystal Coast, families can take a ferry or boat trip to Cape Lookout, explore historic Beaufort, visit Harkers Island, or spend a morning at the aquarium before heading back to the beach in the afternoon. These shorter outings are perfect for families who want variety without feeling rushed.
If your family enjoys exploring beyond the beach, you can also plan easy day trips to nearby coastal towns, nature areas and state parks. That makes the Crystal Coast a great option not only for a week-long vacation but also for long weekends where you want a mix of beach time and something new to explore.
