Throw an Axe! You Won’t Regret it!
By Guest Blogger Amy Hughes
Axe throwing is amazing and you shouldn’t be scared to try it! It’s completely safe if you follow the rules and great for a date night, girls or guys night out, or corporate event. But it’s more than just a one time adventure. There is a whole community of people who throw in weekly leagues, participate in local competitions, and even go to international axe throwing championships!
A coworker convinced me to start throwing with her in a Tuesday night league after we went out to a local axe club for a corporate event. I was a bit hesitant at first, I am definitely not an athlete or a lumberjack, but good news, neither is anyone else who throws in my league. And we’re all okay with that!
Our group of 20 is made up of retirees, teachers, single moms, bartenders, doctors, dental assistants, electricians, and business owners. We all get together once a week and have a craft beer or two, socialize, order a pizza, and throw some axes! I’m so grateful I took the leap and tried something new!
There are several types of leagues out there, but the most common are WATL ( World Axe Throwing League) and an IATF (International Axe Throwing Federation) league. The main difference between the leagues is the way the target is set up and the way they play their game.
When you visit a WATL or IATF certified axe club the trained instructors there will show you the proper way to throw and explain all the rules of their particular games.
If you’ve never been urban axe throwing before, it would probably be a good idea to go throw at least once so you can get a feel for it before signing up for the league. But don’t be intimidated to sign up! Most people who join are there for fun and to become better throwers.
