Doing Good Things: Autism Unbound
Autism Unbound is a charitable organization dedicated to addressing the needs of the autism community in the areas of advocacy, education, and support. Our mission is to enable persons affected by autism spectrum disorder to live more independent, full lives by influencing the future today. Since we are an all-volunteer non-profit organization, 100% of the money we receive goes directly into our focus areas for the public.
What Autism Unbound Does
We offer families of children with disabilities monthly opportunities to come together with other families and participate in a community activity free of charge. This allows our families to have these experiences in a stress-free environment. In the past we have rented out the ice skating rink for our families, trampoline park, and had private showings at the movie theater, just to name a few.Â
We also provide monthly opportunities for moms to meet out at local restaurants to gain information and support each other. Moms, teachers, and therapists are always welcome.Â
Lastly, we provide teacher grants to EC teachers and therapists in Guilford County public and private schools.Â
Who Autism Unbound Helps
Although our name implies that we only serve families with children on the autism spectrum, this could not be further from the truth. All families are welcome and we embrace all disabilities. Autism Unbound provides social opportunities that under typical circumstances, individuals with autism and their families would struggle to experience. We arrange occasions throughout the year for adults, children, and siblings to participate in community events with reduced stressful triggers. These include Lazy 5 Ranch, holiday parties, movies, bowling, and more! Since 2013, Autism Unbound has funded over $40,000 in social opportunities. Since our inception in July 2013, we have given more than $120,000 in educational materials and equipment to our classrooms. The community can connect with us by going to our website and signing up for our monthly newsletter: www.autismunbound.org
Why We Help
We operate as an all-volunteer, non-profit organization; 100% of the money raised from fundraising events and other donations goes directly to our service work and focus areas. We have accrued over 15,000 volunteer hours since the inception of Autism Unbound. Our accrual translates to a value of more than $300,000 in volunteer dollars invested back into Guilford County. Everyone involved has been touched by an individual with special needs and is genuinely motivated to give back out of the kindness in their hearts, as we don’t have any paid positions. We would like to see individuals with special needs living full, independent lives without judgment as they participate in our community.
