If you’re exploring restaurants in downtown Blowing Rock, Mellow Mushroom is a crowd-pleaser for families with its kid-friendly menu and vibrant atmosphere. Don’t forget to save room for dessert at Kilwin’s, where you can indulge in handmade fudge and caramel apples. We got a hot cocoa to warm us up while we wandered around the downtown shops.
If you want to head into nearby Boone, start your day with coffee and pastries at Stick Boy Bread Co., a bakery that offers everything from fresh croissants to hearty loaves of bread. The fresh cinnamon roll with cream cheese frosting and Almond Joy latte were delicious.
Also in Boone, try Bocca Bistro for Italian classics or Fizz Ed Family Bar, a family-friendly spot with something for everyone. For a casual vibe, The Cardinal serves up some of the best burgers and craft beer in the area.

I was surprised to see that it wasn’t really a hike but more of a short, accessible walk in the attraction, making it great for families.
Mystery Hill
Mystery Hill is a must-visit for families. Their gravitational anomaly room will leave you puzzled. Balls rolling and water flowing uphill. They also offer gem mining, bull riding, ax throwing, and more! It is all included in your ticket. They recommend that you allow 4 hours to complete everything they offer. If you don’t finish everything in one day you can save your receipt and they will allow you to complete another day.
Each person gets at least a lb of gems in each bucket. Our girls were super excited with what they found. They found a few geodes too. The employee broke them open so they could see what was inside. With interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, this attraction is sure to entertain visitors of all ages. You can also get an old timey photo at a discount with your admission ticket for a fun souvenir to take home.

Visiting during the holiday season? Don’t miss the Tweetsie Railroad Christmas. It’s a family-friendly tradition that will get everyone in the holiday spirit. Disclaimer we did not do our research and mostly everything here was outdoors. We were freezing! Layer up and bring a blanket. Even the train ride is an open train. We foolishly assumed it would be covered like the NC transportation museum one we did.
Doc Rocks Gem Mine and Amusement
At Doc Rocks Gem Mine and Amusement, kids can channel their inner geologist. Sift through dirt to uncover colorful gemstones. The laser tag, mini putt, and nerf battle activities will also be a hit with children and adults alike.

For a more laid-back movie experience, take a scenic drive to West Jefferson and enjoy a film at the Parkway Theater. Affordable tickets—just $5 for matinees—make this a budget-friendly activity perfect for families.
Visit a Christmas Tree Farm

A little bit of a drive is the Original Mast General Store (3565 Hwy 194 S. Sugar Grove, NC 28679) browse for everything from nostalgic candy to outdoor gear. There is another Mast General store in Downtown Blowing Rock. Close to the Original Mast General store art lovers will appreciate The Pottery Lot, where local artisans display their handcrafted ceramics. You can also do classes and make your own items here. Disclaimer their website says you can pick up in 2-3 weeks, so might not work out if you are just doing a short trip.
