How I Balance Work Demands and Life at Home as a Female Entrepreneur

As a female entrepreneur, people often ask how I manage the balance between work and home life. While the phrasing may vary, the heart of the question remains the same — and in my experience, so does the answer. The key lies in how we perceive the balance. I don’t view my life as being split between work and home. My life is at home. My work is at work. That shift in mindset changes everything.

Tip 1: Perspective is Everything

Perspective is what helps me prioritize and stay grounded. My job will always place demands on my time, body, and mental energy. When I reach a goal at work, it stays there. It’s an accomplishment I’m proud of, but it doesn’t define my life. Home is where my life is lived. It’s where I recharge, where I feel most myself, and where time is not a demand but a gift.

I don’t pressure myself to meet arbitrary standards at home. If the bed doesn’t get made on Monday morning, so what? But if payroll isn’t processed on Monday, that directly affects people’s lives. That contrast is clear to me. I allow myself to be fully present at work during the day — and just as present at home in the evenings. I rarely use the term “work life” because to me, my life isn’t at work. That simple mindset has made it easier to set boundaries, reduce stress, and appreciate each space for what it is. I protect my home life unapologetically because it’s where I refuel and where I truly live.

Tip 2: Stay Organized with Calendars and Communication

One of the most practical ways I keep things balanced is by staying organized. We have what I call the “master calendar” at home — it includes every appointment, commitment, and activity for all six of us. There’s also a dry erase wall calendar in the kitchen that everyone can see, plus individual planners or apps for each family member. We’ve had weekly family calendar meetings since before our kids could even read, and now they’re part of those meetings too! It’s been a great way to stay on the same page and help the kids take ownership of their schedules.

Tip 3: Meal Planning Simplifies Everything

Meal planning is another game changer. I keep a dry erase menu board in the kitchen where I list out dinners for the week. It helps with grocery shopping, keeps my pantry organized, and saves me from scrambling for ideas at the end of a long day. I take a weekly inventory of what we have, create a menu, and typically shop once a week based on that plan. It saves time, energy, and money — three things always in short supply in a busy household!
