beachin' it in the triad

Beachin’ It in the Triad

If you’re not able to make it to the coast this summer, don’t fret — the perfect solution is closer than you think. The Triad has some genuinely excellent lake beaches, sandy shores, and outdoor swimming spots that deliver real beach vibes without the three-hour drive.

Our family has always loved hiking at Hanging Rock State Park, but several years ago I discovered something even better hiding inside the park: a full-blown beach with a sandy shore, lifeguards, a diving dock, and a snack bar overlooking a beautiful 12-acre lake. I packed the kids up with a beach chair, sand toys, and my favorite book, and hightailed it there. Since then, we’ve made it a summer tradition — and we’ve found a few more spots around the Triad worth knowing about.

Hanging Rock State Park Lake Beach — Our Favorite

Where Is the Hanging Rock State Park Beach?

Location: 1790 Hanging Rock Park Road, Danbury, NC 27016. Hanging Rock beach is less than an hour’s drive from Winston-Salem and about 90 minutes from Greensboro and High Point — making it an easy day trip for Triad families.

Follow the signs to the swimming area, cross the bridge, and you’ll see the 12-acre lake beach on your right. Park at the top of the drive and take a short paved walk down to a large stone building overlooking the lake — this is where you check in.

Hanging Rock Lake Beach Hours & Admission

  • Season: Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend
  • Days open: Thursday through Sunday (closed Monday–Wednesday). Also open the two holiday Mondays — Memorial Day (May 25) and Labor Day (September 7).
  • Swim hours: 10:00am – 5:30pm
  • Admission: $6 adults | $4 children ages 3–12 | Free swim 5:00–5:30pm for all
  • Best for: Families with kids of all ages, solo parent outings, even teens — easy, low-stress, and genuinely fun

What to Expect When You Arrive

One thing to know before you go: coolers must be checked at the door (no glass products are allowed on the beach). You’re given a claim key so you can grab items from your cooler as often as you’d like throughout the day — it’s a simple, no-hassle system.

Amenities: Restrooms, Showers, and a Snack Bar

Inside the stone building, you’ll find restrooms, showers, and changing facilities. Head upstairs and you’ll find a shaded snack bar serving burgers, chicken sandwiches, pizza, ice cream, and candy. There are also picnic tables and grills tucked into the wooded area just behind the building.

The Beach, Lifeguards, and Diving Dock

Past the stone building, you’ll find a large shaded grassy area leading to a sandy beach, with two lifeguard stands monitoring a roped-off swimming zone.

A few yards out, an anchored dock with two diving boards (and its own lifeguard) offers more adventurous fun. Kids must be able to swim unassisted to reach the dock — life jackets and “swimmies” are welcome in the roped-off swim area but not permitted at the dock.

Canoe and Rowboat Rentals

Good news — canoe and rowboat rentals are back! They’re available seasonally, Thursday through Sunday, from 10am–4:30pm (last rental of the day), and all boats must be returned by 5:30pm.

A few things to know before you go: a rental fee now applies (it used to be free), and renters must be at least 16 years old. Personal boats and watercraft aren’t permitted on the lake, so if you want to paddle around, the park’s rentals are your only option.

More Water Fun in the Triad

Tips for a Great Beach Day in the Triad

  • Arrive early. Hanging Rock beach fills up on summer weekends — arriving at opening (10am) gives you the best parking, the best spots, and the most relaxed experience.
  • Pack your own cooler at Hanging Rock — but remember it gets checked at the door. Use the claim key system to grab snacks and drinks as you need them rather than carrying everything to the beach.
  • Water shoes are helpful at lake beaches. Lake bottoms can be rocky, and the walk from parking areas involves uneven terrain. Water shoes protect little feet and give better grip.
  • Reapply sunscreen at the water. Lake settings are sun-exposed and the combination of water reflection and open sky means you burn faster than you expect.
  • Check hours before you go. Hanging Rock beach is Thursday–Sunday only (plus holiday Mondays). Kernersville Lake Park is closed Wednesdays and closed entirely in winter. Both operate seasonally.
  • Bring life jackets for non-swimmers. Lake depths vary and even roped-off swim areas at lake parks can have unexpected drop-offs. Life jackets are always welcome in swim zones.
  • Free swim at Hanging Rock from 5–5:30pm. If you’re already in the area and want to give the beach a quick try before committing, the last 30 minutes of the day are free. A good option for first-time visitors or when you arrive late.

Final Thoughts

Ever since our first visit, this has become one of our go-to summer spots — easy enough for a solo parent outing, and fun enough that even our teenagers still ask to go. If you’re looking for a beach day without the beach-trip price tag or drive time, Hanging Rock delivers.
