Beech Mountain packs an impressive amount of family fun into one small mountain town. We spent a family weekend exploring Beech Mountain, and between hiking, playgrounds, scenic chairlift rides, restaurants, mountain views, and local attractions, we had plenty to keep us busy. At an elevation of 5,506 feet, Beech Mountain is known as the highest incorporated town east of the Mississippi River. That elevation means cooler temperatures, gorgeous mountain scenery, and plenty of outdoor adventures.

While many people immediately think of skiing when they hear Beech Mountain, we discovered there are plenty of things to do in Beech Mountain NC with kids outside of ski season, too. Here’s a look at where we stayed, what we did, where we ate, and some additional family-friendly Beech Mountain activities worth adding to your trip.

Where to Stay in Beech Mountain

If you’re planning to make this a full weekend trip, there are several lodging options on and around Beech Mountain. One option for families is a vacation rental right next to Beech Mountain Ski Resort. While it’s not luxury accommodations, the location is unbeatable, you’re steps away from The Land of Oz, the ski resort, and other mountain attractions. A bonus: First Chair Coffee Shop is right next door, making your morning coffee run convenient before heading out for the day.

Parking & EV Charging at the Town Visitor Center

The Town of Beech Mountain Parking Lot (101 Bark Park Way) has EV chargers available, but they’re free and very slow-charging. Parking at most town lots is $3/hour, and parking enforcement is active — make sure to pay the parking fee to avoid a ticket.

Playgrounds in Beech Mountain

One thing we appreciated about Beech Mountain was having several places where kids could simply play. When you’re balancing hiking, restaurants, and sightseeing with younger children, playground stops can make the entire day go much more smoothly.

Fireman’s Park

Fireman’s Park is a firefighter-themed playground right next to the town’s fire station. The play equipment is shaped like a real fire engine, and there are picnic tables with grills, a short hiking trail, and a small stream for water play. It’s geared toward younger kids and makes a great first stop.

Beech Mountain Playground

The playground has a rubber padding with fun for a variety of ages it says best for 5-12, but I think a little younger than that will likely be find with assistance from parents. Bathrooms are available at the playground, which is helpful for younger kids. It overlooks Bark Park, so kids can watch all the dogs playing off-leash while they play, an added highlight for any dog-loving family. Bark Park is an off-leash park with separate zones for big and small dogs, a water station, a picnic pavilion with views.

Buckeye Playground

Buckeye Playground is part of the Buckeye Recreation Center complex. This is a convenient stop because families can combine the playground with the recreation center, Buckeye Lake, hiking, fishing, or other activities in the area.

Buckeye Recreation Center is particularly useful for families because it offers a mix of indoor and outdoor recreation. Depending on current availability and programming, amenities include:

Indoor and outdoor playgrounds
Pickleball
Tennis
Basketball
Fitness facilities
Reading areas
Kayak, Canoe, and fishing gear loaner program
Guided hikes
Outdoor equipment programs

This is also a good place to remember if mountain weather changes your outdoor plans. Hours are weekdays 8:30am–7pm, Saturday 9am–5pm, and Sunday 11am–5pm.

Families with strollers: The Buckeye Rec Center Loop is a paved 1/3-mile trail with minimal elevation change that’s suitable for strollers and scooters.

Buckeye Lake: Fishing, Kayaking & Bird-Watching

Buckeye Lake Recreation Area, next to the Rec Center, is a 6.5-acre reservoir surrounded by 60 acres of protected forest. It is open year-round for hiking, birding, and fishing. The lake is stocked annually with brown, rainbow, and brook trout, plus channel catfish and sunfish. Anyone 16+ needs a fishing license, available at Fred’s General Mercantile along with tackle and bait. One important note: swimming and personal watercraft aren’t allowed here, since Buckeye Lake is part of the town’s drinking water supply. Buckeye Recreation Center has a FREE canoes and kayaks loaner program, so you can use those crafts to enjoy the lake. If fishing is the main goal, Lake Coffey is a popular alternative spot nearby.

The Buckeye Lake area is known for its variety of birds, and Beech Mountain’s forests provide habitat for numerous species. Turn it into a scavenger hunt and see how many different birds your family can spot. You can also check the Beech Mountain Visitor Center for information about local wildlife and birding.

Hike to Buckeye Creek Falls

One of the prettiest outdoor stops during our Beech Mountain weekend was the hike toward Buckeye Creek Falls. The Falls Trail begins at Buckeye Recreation Center, which makes it easy to combine the waterfall with Buckeye Lake, the playground, and recreation center. The trail descends alongside the creek toward the approximately 25-foot waterfall. Expect a true mountain trail with dirt, rocks, roots, and elevation changes, so we recommend sturdy shoes rather than sandals.

The waterfall and surrounding forest make this an especially pretty place to explore during fall as the leaves begin changing.

Important 2026 Trail Update: Flooding from Hurricane Helene damaged a bridge below the waterfall. The Falls Trail is currently accessible as an out-and-back trail to the waterfall rather than its traditional full loop while repairs continue.

We loved that we could experience several different sides of Beech Mountain from one location, lake views, hiking, a waterfall, playground time, and indoor recreation were all centered around the Buckeye Recreation Center area.

Beech Mountain Resort: Lift-Assisted Biking & More

Beech Mountain Resort is a full-service mountain resort offering year-round activities and entertainment.

Skiing & Snowboarding: During winter months (December-March), Beech Mountain Resort operates as a ski area with multiple trails for all skill levels. Lessons are available for beginners, and equipment rentals are on-site if you don’t have your own gear.
Town’s free sledding hill: It’s the only sledding hill that makes snow in the entire High-Country, and people come from far and wide to visit. More info: https://beechmtn.com/visit/sledding-hill/
Scenic Chairlift Rides: Chairlift access takes you to the summit with panoramic mountain views. Perfect for those who want the scenic experience without hiking. The chairlift also connects to various trails and activities at the top. These are offered Memorial Day to the end of September.
Mountain Biking: Summer and fall bring excellent mountain biking opportunities. The resort has trails for various difficulty levels, and bike rentals are available. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced rider, there are options for everyone.
Skybar: Located at the summit adjacent to The Land of Oz, 5506′ Skybar offers drinks and views. It’s a great spot to relax after activities or catch the sunset over the mountains.
Beech Mountain Brewing Co.: The resort’s brewery serves craft beers and offers a casual dining atmosphere. Check their event calendar for live music, food trucks, and special events throughout the year.
Gift Shop: Browse the resort gift shop for various gear, apparel, and souvenirs. If you forget anything or need to pick up last-minute items, the shop has you covered.
Summer Concerts & Events: The resort hosts concerts, festivals, and seasonal events throughout the year. Check their events calendar when planning your visit. Blackberry Jam is a fun celebration that is a fun tradtion with live peformances paired with blackberry-themed treats from local restaurants.

Hiking the Emerald Outback

The Emerald Outback Trail System (328 N Pinnacle Ridge Rd) is a 7-mile network of trails at the summit, ranging from an easy, family-friendly mile (Oz Forest Run) to more strenuous mountain-bike-only sections. There are four named overlooks: Roan Mountain Overlook, Elk Valley, Awesome Oz, and Pride Rock along the Southern Ridge Trail. The trails are open year-round, with May through October considered the best window.

We did the Oz Forest trail, about halfway up the trail is Roan Mountain overlook with long views into Tennessee. There is a lot of trees and brush below you so it isn’t a big wide open view, but mainly peaking over trees. Perfect spot to see fall colors!

Sunset Park: The Best Sunset Spot on the Mountain

Just down the road from the Emerald Outback trailhead (313 N Pinnacle Ridge Rd, Sunset Park is a small, easy-to-miss spot worth building into your evening plans. It sits high on the mountain with a west-facing view, and a short trail leads to a set of boulder viewpoints that make it an ideal spot to watch the sunset over the mountains. Off-street parking fits only a couple of cars, so it’s a quiet, low-key stop rather than a crowded overlook. Similar to Roan Mountain Overlook, there isn’t a wide open path you are mostly peaking over trees.

Fred’s General Mercantile: The Highest General Store in the East

You can’t really visit Beech Mountain without stopping at Fred’s General Mercantile. Fred’s has been a fixture on the mountain since 1979 and feels like part general store, part mountain institution. Inside you’ll find an eclectic assortment of groceries, candy, hiking supplies, hardware, fishing equipment, local products, baked goods, clothing, souvenirs, and more.

Fred’s Backside Deli

Fred’s isn’t just for shopping. The Backside Deli serves sandwiches, burgers, homemade soups, salads, and other casual lunch options. If you’re already stopping at Fred’s, it’s an easy place to grab lunch without adding another destination to your itinerary.

Where to Eat & Drink

Beech Mountain punches well above its weight on dining for such a small town. A few favorites to work into the weekend:

Beech Alpen Restaurant

Address: 700 Beech Mountain Parkway, Beech Mountain, NC

Beech Alpen Restaurant offers a more elevated dining experience without feeling overly formal. The mountain setting and covered deck make it a nice option when you want a sit-down dinner after a full day outside. The menu includes seafood, steaks, trout, crab cakes, lobster bisque, and other hearty dishes.

First Chair Coffee Shop

Coffee shop & pastries later in the day they have a few more items on their menu when their kitchen opens. We went around 8am and it wasn’t open at that time.

Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria

Pizza is almost always an easy win when traveling with kids. Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria has been a Beech Mountain fixture for decades and is also home to summer Family Fun Nights. They had a lot of fun decor, an arcade, and cookies and ice cream too!

5506′ Skybar

If you’re already taking the scenic chairlift, eating or grabbing a drink at 5506′ Skybar gives you an excuse to spend longer enjoying the summit. The mountain views are really the star here. We grabbed mexican food from the window.

Mountaineer Adventure Tower

Located near Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria, Mountaineer Adventure Tower offers another option for adventurous families. The multi-story climbing structure includes three stories of climbing challenges, a 25-foot corkscrew slide, and 360-degree views from the top. Parents can relax at the bottom in one of their cozy chair or play lawn game. It runs May through October.

Summer in Beech Mountain offers Free Live Music & Events

This might be the best-kept secret about a Beech Mountain trip: there’s free live music happening somewhere on the mountain basically every night.

During summer Fridays bring Family Fun Night at Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria — live music, activities, and movies under the stars (weather permitting). Also at Famous Brick Oven Pizzeria Every Thursday & Sunday you can enjoy a family friendly piano artist, Andrew Cotts.
Saturdays head up to 5506′ Skybar at Beech Mountain Resort, which packs a lot into one summer weekend spot: Mile High Yoga kicks things off at 10:30–11:30am both Saturdays and Sundays (June–September, chairlift ride up included), live music takes over in the afternoon from 2:30–5:30pm, and select Saturday evenings bring a Sunset Food Truck Rodeo (5–8pm) with food trucks, craft vendors, and a live DJ. The lineup shifts week to week, so it’s worth checking the resort’s events calendar before you head up.
Sundays give you two options: Fred’s Gazebo, at Fred’s General Mercantile, hosts a free concert series that’s been running for around 25 years — shows start at 6:30pm, and locals bring blankets and lawn chairs (pack a light jacket, it cools off fast once the sun starts dropping).
Beech Mountain Resort also runs its own summer concert series.

Blackberry Jam: Summer Fun on Beech Mountain

Blackberry Jam, a summer-long celebration that takes place throughout July and August on Beech Mountain. Rather than being a single festival on one weekend, Blackberry Jam brings together several of the things that make summer on Beech Mountain so much fun—live music, outdoor recreation, cool mountain temperatures, local food, and, of course, blackberries.

Throughout Blackberry Jam, local restaurants and businesses get creative with special blackberry-inspired food and drinks. You might find everything from blackberry desserts and ice cream to blackberry barbecue sauce, specialty drinks, and other seasonal treats.

Fall in Beech Mountain

We visited during the warmer season, but Beech Mountain is one of those destinations that changes dramatically with the seasons. Fall brings cooler temperatures, changing leaves, special events, and one of Beech Mountain’s most famous attractions. At 5,506 feet in elevation, Beech Mountain is the highest town in the eastern United States. That elevation also means fall arrives a little earlier here than in many other parts of North Carolina. The first hints of color can begin appearing by mid-September, with fall foliage typically building toward peak color around early October and colorful views into the valleys continuing afterward.

Fall Bonus: Land of Oz’s Autumn at Oz Festival

Land of Oz originally opened as a Wizard of Oz-themed attraction on Beech Mountain in 1970. Although it no longer operates as a traditional theme park, the property comes back to life during Autumn at Oz. Visitors follow the Yellow Brick Road through an immersive Wizard of Oz experience with Dorothy and other familiar characters. The event takes place on select fall weekends and is extremely popular, so this isn’t something we’d recommend leaving until the last minute. Tickets frequently sell out. Spring in Beach Mountain

Mile High Kite Festival

Beech Mountain also hosts its annual Mile High Kite Festival each fall, a longstanding local tradition of kite flying at elevation. Dates vary each year, so check Beech Mountain’s current event calendar when planning a fall visit. before planning a trip around it.

Nearby: Elk River Falls

A scenic waterfall hike approximately 20 minutes from Beech Mountain. While the falls are beautiful and popular for hiking, swimming is not recommended due to strong currents and slippery rocks. Enjoy the views and take photos, but stay out of the water. Good hiking shoes and caution are essential.

Tips We Learned From Visiting Beech Mountain With Kids

Bring layers – Beech Mountain’s elevation means temperatures can be significantly cooler than what you’re experiencing elsewhere in North Carolina. Even during summer, we recommend having jackets or sweatshirts available, particularly in the evening.
Wear good shoes – We encountered mountain trails, rocks, roots, and uneven terrain. Sneakers or hiking shoes are a much better choice than flip-flops for most outdoor activities.
Don’t overschedule – Everything looks close on a map, but mountain roads and winding drives can make trips take longer than expected. Give yourself time to actually enjoy each stop.
Check schedules before leaving – Chairlift operations, restaurants, live music, seasonal attractions, and outdoor programs can all have changing schedules.
Build in playground breaks – If you’re traveling with younger children, alternating sightseeing with playground time can make a huge difference.
Be prepared for mountain driving – Expect steep grades and winding roads as you travel around Beech Mountain and the surrounding High Country.

Plan a Fall Family Getaway to Beech Mountain

After spending the weekend here, we can see why fall is such a special time to experience Beech Mountain. Between the cooler temperatures, mountain trails, waterfalls, Buckeye Lake, long-range views, playgrounds, outdoor recreation, and changing leaves, there are plenty of ways for families to explore, but there’s also room to slow down. And that may have been our favorite part.

Our weekend didn’t feel like a race from attraction to attraction. We could hike in the morning, let the kids play, enjoy the mountain scenery, grab something to eat, and simply enjoy being somewhere that felt completely different from home. Is Beech Mountain Good for Families?

Yes. We found plenty to do with kids, particularly for families who enjoy being outside. It’s also small enough that you don’t feel like you’re spending the entire trip driving between activities.

How Many Days Do You Need in Beech Mountain?

We think a weekend works really well. Two or three days gives families enough time to explore Beech Mountain Resort, hike, visit the playgrounds, eat at local restaurants, and enjoy some downtime. If you’re also planning to visit Grandfather Mountain, Tweetsie Railroad, Blowing Rock, or other nearby attractions, we’d consider staying longer.
