Dragon's Breath

Beware of the Dragon’s Breath

If you’ve been following my blogs, you know I love sharing vacation stories. Our recent trip to Myrtle Beach didn’t disappoint. As we wandered around the busy downtown strip, we noticed all the fun, over-the-top places that practically yell, “You’re on vacation! Spend like there’s no tomorrow!”. There were eye-popping candy stores like Sugar Life and I Love Sugar, photo booths, caricature artists, hand mold shops, and yes, even the usual time-share reps who want “just 90 minutes” of your time. But what really caught our attention this time was a newer attraction: a colorful dessert called Dragon’s Breath.

What is Dragon’s Breath?

Dragon’s Breath is a trendy snack made from puffed cereal balls that are flash-frozen in liquid nitrogen. The moment you pop one in your mouth and exhale, it releases a smoky vapor—making you look like you’re breathing like a dragon. It’s eye-catching, fun, and definitely viral-worthy. These little smoky puffs are becoming increasingly popular at vacation spots and even showing up in local malls and events.

Is Dragon’s Breath Safe to Eat?

As a parent, my gut instinct was, “This has to be dangerous.” I mean, liquid nitrogen sounds more like something from a science lab than a dessert topping. At the Myrtle Beach stand, multiple signs warned not to touch the snack with bare hands. The staff even gave specific instructions on how to safely eat the product. They suggest not letting it sit in the mouth too long. That alone raised a red flag for me.

According to various health reports, Dragon’s Breath has been linked to mouth and esophagus burns, and even asthma attacks in some individuals. In fact, one news story mentioned a child having a respiratory reaction triggered by inhaling the nitrogen vapor. While it might look like harmless fun, this trend can pose serious risks, especially to children with respiratory issues or sensitive skin.

Concerns About Dragon’s Breath and Smoking Imitation

What bothered me the most? Watching kids mimic the act of smoking. Yes, the smoky effect is part of the appeal—but it’s eerily similar to the tricks people do while smoking cigarettes or vaping. In a world where we work hard to discourage smoking, it’s unsettling to see a dessert that glamorizes the look of it. The visual message may be subtle, but it can have a lasting impression—especially on impressionable young minds.

Should You Let Your Kids Try Dragon’s Breath?

I get it. We all want our kids to have fun, especially on vacation. But some fun simply isn’t worth the risk. If you come across Dragon’s Breath on your next beach trip or local event, be informed. Ask questions, read warning signs, and talk to your kids about why some desserts come with serious safety concerns. Whether you’re a “cool” parent or an “old fogey” like me (though I still say like a lot), your child’s health and safety should always come first.

Final Thoughts on This Vacation Dessert Trend

Dragon’s Breath may look like a fun and harmless vacation treat, but there are real risks that come with eating liquid nitrogen-infused snacks. From burn injuries to respiratory complications, parents need to weigh the fun factor against potential harm. So, next time you’re strolling down the Myrtle Beach boardwalk—or anywhere this trendy treat pops up—be sure to keep safety first.
