What to do around Greensboro

Parks & Playgrounds

When it comes to free outdoor fun, parks are a consistent hit. This summer we’re planning a “playground hop” — think of it as a bar crawl but with significantly less alcohol and much more sunshine. Greensboro has far more great playgrounds than any single post can cover, so while I’ll highlight our personal favorites here, check out our comprehensive Parks & Playgrounds guide for even more options!

Country Park

Country Park Greensboro, NC

Country Park offers something for everyone. The expansive green spaces are perfect for kite flying, bubble-chasing, and just enjoying fresh air. The trails are great for easy hikes with little legs, and you might spot ducks on the lake. During warmer months you can rent paddleboats for a cruise on the water — available in 30-minute increments, and believe me, 30 minutes of non-stop paddling is more than enough. Once those leg muscles have had a moment to recover, take a leisurely trip up the hill to explore the solar system walk and enjoy a classic carousel ride. See our full Day Trip to Country Park guide for everything the park has to offer.

Bur-Mil Park

Bur-Mil Park offers a diverse range of activities from a large playground and scenic trails to a wildlife education center. The Frank Sharpe Jr. Wildlife Education Center is completely free and features live animal exhibits and a children’s area that little ones love exploring. In the retail section, you can find fishing passes for the ponds along with bait. No fishing gear? No problem — kids 15 and under can participate in the North Carolina Fishing Loan-A-Rod program. The park also has an accessible nature-themed playground, ensuring fun for children of all abilities, plus pickleball, tennis courts, and a driving range for more active recreation.

Barber Park

Barber Park on Greensboro’s east side features a great playground with a designated Tot Spot for the youngest kiddos. Bigger kids and grown-ups will appreciate the 18-hole disc golf course. Seasonally, there’s a large sprayground that’s free for families, and the park often hosts free community events at the outdoor amphitheater. There’s plenty of space to ride bikes and scooters, and if you need a bike, stop by the Community Bike Shop within the park to borrow one from their weekly bike library.

LeBauer Park

Right in the heart of downtown Greensboro, LeBauer Park stands out as a premier family destination. The inclusive playground features climbing structures, musical instruments, and a plaza with seasonal interactive water fountains where kids can splash around. Parents will appreciate the nearby coffee kiosk, while kids revel in the freedom of the wide-open lawn. LeBauer Park regularly hosts free family-friendly programming — yoga sessions, concerts, and kids’ storytimes via the adjacent Central Library. And if you’re already at LeBauer, you’re perfectly situated to pop over to GreenHill for Family Art Night!

Kotis Art Park
Kotis Art Park in Greensboro, NC

One of Greensboro’s best hidden gems is the Kotis Street Art Outdoor Gallery at 1316 Lees Chapel Rd, Greensboro, NC 27455. This outdoor art space is filled with massive murals, colorful graffiti-style artwork, and constantly changing pieces from talented regional artists. A genuinely unexpected and memorable free stop — kids respond to the scale and color of the work in a way they don’t with more traditional gallery art, and the rotating pieces mean each visit can look different.

Family Attractions in Greensboro

Family Art Night at GreenHill

Family Art Night at GreenHill is one of my absolute favorite free Greensboro activities. Held every Wednesday from 5–7pm, this event offers free admission to all. You and your children can explore art in a judgment-free, kid-friendly zone — painting, clay, weekly crafts, and recycled materials to create with. It’s a beautiful opportunity to make memories, introduce kids to the world of art, and develop concentration and fine motor skills. See our full GreenHill at ArtQuest guide for more.

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park

For a unique blend of history and outdoor exploration, Guilford Courthouse National Military Park offers a chance to step back in time. The park features scenic walking trails, interactive signs that bring history to life, and captivating live reenactments on special event days. Kids can participate in the Junior Ranger program, earning a badge while learning about the Revolutionary War — and there’s an annual Junior Ranger Day with additional activities. Admission is free, and the visitor center includes educational exhibits and a short film. The park also offers Bark Ranger, Nature Bingo, and Junior Naturalist Programs.

Greensboro Pinball Museum

Address: 2140 Lawndale Dr, Greensboro, NC 27408 Website: gsopinball.com
Greensboro Pinball Museum is one of those genuinely surprising local gems that becomes an instant family favorite the first time you visit. Located on Lawndale Drive near the Greensboro Science Center, the museum is home to dozens of classic and modern pinball machines, arcade games, and vintage coin-op machines spanning multiple decades of arcade history — all included with a single flat admission fee. That means you pay once and play everything, all day, without feeding a single quarter.

Whether your family includes retro game enthusiasts or kids who’ve never touched a pinball machine, the experience is pure fun. Little ones are mesmerized by the lights and sounds. Older kids compete over scores. Adults find themselves unexpectedly absorbed in machines they remember from childhood. The “pay once, play all day” model makes it significantly more economical than a traditional arcade — and far more memorable.

Best Free Things to Do in Greensboro

Greensboro Public Library – Storytimes & Activities

The Greensboro Public Library, like all libraries, is a treasure trove of free things to do. Every branch within this library system offers a host of free programs designed to spark curiosity and foster a love of learning. From gentle baby storytimes to engaging school-age book clubs, the library provides a reliable and completely free option for a combination of education and joyful play. Visit our list of library storytimes to plan your visit!

Greensboro Arboretum

Nature-loving families will enjoy the Greensboro Arboretum, located in the Lindley Park neighborhood. This peaceful 17-acre oasis feels like a living classroom, inviting you and your children to wander through its diverse and beautifully curated plant collections. Imagine leisurely strolling past vibrant flowers that paint the landscape with color, beneath the shade of towering trees that whisper stories of time, and alongside tranquil water features that offer moments of serenity. It’s not only educational but also breathtakingly gorgeous, providing a welcome escape from the everyday hustle and bustle.

Gateway Gardens

Colorful, interactive, and completely free to visit, Gateway Gardens is a magical experience for little ones. Located just minutes from downtown, it’s part garden and part storybook playground. There are whimsical oversized sculptures of fruits and vegetables, an alphabet scavenger hunt, animal-shaped topiary, and imaginative areas where kids can explore and learn about plants. It’s particularly great for toddlers through elementary-aged children, but its beauty will be enjoyed by any age group. The garden is open year-round.

Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNCG — Free

Address: 500 Tate St, Greensboro, NC 27402 Website: weatherspoon.uncg.edu

One of Greensboro’s most underappreciated free cultural gems, the Weatherspoon Art Museum on the UNCG campus houses a permanent collection of modern and contemporary American art alongside rotating special exhibitions. Admission is always free. The museum is intimate, beautifully curated, and offers a genuinely different experience from the hands-on chaos of a children’s museum — ideal for older kids, teens, and parents who want a quieter cultural afternoon. Check the website for current exhibition schedules.

Best for: Families with older kids and teens; art-loving parents; a quieter cultural afternoon Tip: Combine with a campus walk through UNCG — the grounds are beautiful and completely free to explore.

Greensboro History Museum — Free

Address: 130 Summit Ave, Greensboro, NC 27401 Website: greensborohistory.org

The Greensboro History Museum is a consistently underutilized free gem in the heart of downtown. Exhibits cover Greensboro’s history from its earliest days through the Civil Rights movement — including the Woolworth’s lunch counter sit-ins that helped change American history, which the museum covers in meaningful depth. Free admission makes this an easy add to any downtown Greensboro day, and the Civil Rights content gives older kids and teens genuinely important historical context. Parking is available downtown or walk from LeBauer Park.

Best for: Families with kids 8 and up; history-loving families; pairing with a LeBauer Park visit

Bog Garden Branch at Benjamin Park

The Bog Garden at Benjamin Park is one of Greensboro’s most beautiful and peaceful free outdoor spaces. A free, accessible boardwalk winds through a beautiful wetland area filled with native plants, birds, turtles, and the kind of quiet natural atmosphere that’s increasingly hard to find close to the city. Completely free, stroller-friendly on the paved paths, and particularly lovely in spring and fall. A perfect short outing for families who want a nature experience without a long drive.

Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden

Credit: greensborobeautiful.org

Known for its variety of bronze sculptures, the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden provides a beautiful and serene setting ideal for a slow-paced outing. Its winding brick paths invite gentle exploration, while the seasonal blooms offer a feast for the eyes. Shaded benches are strategically placed throughout the garden, providing perfect spots to enjoy a quiet snack break or just soak in the peaceful atmosphere. This stroller-friendly oasis is an ideal choice when you need a breath of fresh air and a moment of tranquility.

Kotis Art Park — Free

1316 Lees Chapel Rd, Greensboro, NC 27455. Massive rotating murals, graffiti-style art, and colorful artwork from regional artists in an outdoor gallery setting. A genuinely unique free Greensboro stop. See the Parks section above for full details.
