Looking for a breathtaking family day trip in the North Carolina mountains? Now is the perfect time to explore Hebron Rock Colony, one of the High Country’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Nestled between Boone and Blowing Rock, this stunning destination is ideal for families with children ages four and up. The hike to Hebron Falls via the scenic Boone Fork Trail offers adventure, beauty, and unforgettable memories.

While this trail is a favorite among Appalachian State University alumni, it’s also becoming increasingly popular with families from the Triad. If you’re planning to hike Hebron Rock Colony, be sure to follow updated directions—towing is now enforced in old parking areas. Keep reading for a step-by-step guide, safety tips, and travel suggestions.

How to Get to Boone Fork Trail Entrance

From the Triad area, head toward Boone via Highway 421. Once near Boone, merge onto the Blue Ridge Parkway heading south. This route is incredibly scenic, with plenty of opportunities to stop for family photos. Once the parkway winds you close to Blowing Rock, you will see signs for Price Park. This is where you will want to park your car to begin your hike. Price Park has a campground, too, that you can read about here.

Park at Price Park and head toward the public restrooms. You’ll cross a bridge to access the trailhead.

Hiking the Boone Fork Trail

To reach Hebron Rock Colony, you’ll need to follow the Boone Fork Trail. This moderate trail winds through lush forest and alongside a gentle creek. Along the way, you’ll find smaller rock formations, perfect for little ones to explore and dip their toes in. But keep going—the main attraction awaits!

Eventually, you’ll stumble upon enormous boulders, some as big as minivans. Welcome to Hebron Rock Colony. The trail to this point is roughly 3 miles in, with lots of spots for rest, exploration, and photos.

Hebron Rock Colony & Hebron Falls

Once you arrive, your family can spread out on the rocks, enjoy a picnic, or wade in the clear mountain water. Hebron Falls, located within this colony of rocks, adds to the beauty of the scene. It’s a magical place that will have you wondering how so many giant boulders ended up in one hidden spot.

Kids love exploring the area, but note that the terrain can be tricky. If you’re climbing down to the falls and then back up, expect to use both hands—and possibly your spouse—to navigate! Younger children will need help, and parents should plan to keep a close watch.

Safety Tips for Hebron Rock Colony

Because of the rocky and sometimes slippery terrain, safety is key. Teach your children to recognize darker or submerged rocks as potential hazards. If you’re making a leap from one rock to another, choose a path that minimizes injury risk in case of a fall.

Pack lightly—opt for a backpack instead of loose items. Water shoes or hiking sandals with good grip are ideal. Our favorite setup includes a CamelBak for water and snacks stored inside the pack.

Things to Do After Your Hike

After spending time at Hebron Falls, consider exploring Boone and Blowing Rock. Here are a few favorites:

  • Grab lunch at Macado’s or Boone Bagelry on King Street
  • Visit Appalachian State University’s campus
  • Drive to Howard’s Knob for panoramic views
  • Spend the afternoon at Tweetsie Railroad, Mystery Hill, or gem mining
  • Browse shops along Main Street in Blowing Rock
  • Check out the outlets for shopping deals
  • Purchase a self-guided car tour of the Blue Ridge Parkway to discover breathtaking vistas, cultural gems, and hidden trails. Explore at your pace!

Avoid This Mistake!

In years past, many locals used a gravel road near Highway 105 and Valle Crucis to access Hebron Rock Colony. Do not take this route—cars are now being towed. Use the official entrance at Julian Price Park for a safe and legal experience.
