Gem Mining

Gem Mining in North Carolina

If you’re looking for a family-friendly day trip that’s exciting, rewarding, and educational, gem mining in North Carolina is a must-try experience. Just an hour west of the Triad, Emerald Hollow Mine in Hiddenite, NC, is a true hidden gem—both literally and figuratively. Though it’s an easy-to-miss turnoff down a small dirt road, don’t let first impressions fool you. This spot is known as “one of the most unique and interesting geological locations on the North American continent,” according to its website. Families and rockhounds travel from all over for the chance to sluice, dig, and creek hunt at this rare site.

What to Expect at Emerald Hollow Mine

The Emerald Hollow Mine experience includes three exciting gem mining activities: sluicing, surface searching, and creek mining. The staff is welcoming and full of knowledge, and best of all, the pricing is budget-friendly. You can choose just one activity or bundle all three for a full day of treasure hunting. We chose to do it all—and it did not disappoint!

Sluicing: Classic Gem Mining Fun

Sluicing is the activity most people picture when they think of gem mining. Using a bucket filled with native and enriched earth, you’ll sift through it at a covered flume with running water. They provide a stiff-bristled brush to help clean off your discoveries. The thrill of sluicing lies in the unknown—you never know what might be in your bucket! Not sure what you’ve found? Don’t worry—the staff is always happy to help you identify your gems and minerals.

Surface Searching: Easy and Great for Kids

After sluicing, we moved on to surface searching in an open dirt field. This area is especially great for kids or anyone who wants a less strenuous activity. After a good rain, it’s even more exciting as new minerals often come to the surface. You simply scan the ground for shimmering or colorful stones—no digging required.

Creek Mining: The Coolest Spot of the Day

The favorite activity among our group was creek mining. It’s the perfect option for warm weather, thanks to the shade and cool running water. The shallow, rocky creek provides plenty of opportunity to find gems by looking, scooping, or gently digging in the water (not the banks). Just be careful when walking—the rocks can be slippery! Plastic shovels and sifters are allowed, and you can bring your own tools or rent some on-site.
