Day Trip to Shacktown Falls: One of North Carolina’s Hidden Waterfall Gems

If you’ve been searching for an easy waterfall adventure that feels family-friendly and manageable, a day trip to Shacktown Falls (Shore-Styers Mill Waterfall) should absolutely be on your list. Parents are always looking for outdoor destinations that feel exciting for kids without requiring a strenuous hike or an all-day commitment. It can be difficult finding waterfall spots that are accessible, scenic, and still somewhat under the radar. Located inside Shore-Styers Mill Nature Park, Shacktown Falls offers a peaceful outdoor experience with river views, wooded trails, and one of the most unique waterfalls in the Triad region. Whether you’re planning a quick family outing, a nature walk, or a scenic stop during a weekend drive, this hidden gem makes for an easy and memorable adventure.

Where Is Shacktown Falls?

Shacktown Falls is located within Shore-Styers Mill Nature Park in Yadkin County, North Carolina. 1400 Styers Mill Road
Yadkinville, NC 27055

The park sits just outside Yadkinville, making it an easy day trip from Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, and surrounding Triad areas. One of the best parts about visiting is that you don’t need to commit to a difficult mountain hike to enjoy a waterfall experience.

This spot feels peaceful and tucked away without requiring a long drive into western North Carolina.

Shacktown Falls Parking

When you pull up, there is a small parking lot for the falls that holds several cars. Other than that, many people were parking on the sides of the street! We also weren’t sure what kind of “hike” we were getting ourselves into to find the falls, but thankfully we could see the falls from our parked car! The creek is a short walk (my husband estimates 30 yards) down a slightly steep dirt path. There are several trails that go around the falls, so if you are looking for a short hike/walk, you can still do that as well!

What Makes Shacktown Falls Special?

Unlike some larger waterfalls in North Carolina, Shacktown Falls feels quiet and approachable. The waterfall flows along a rocky section of water surrounded by forest, creating a calm and scenic setting that works well for families.

After restoration efforts over the years, the waterfall area has become one of the most photographed natural spots in the region. Depending on recent rainfall, the flow can range from gentle to dramatic, which makes every visit feel a little different.

The sound of the rushing water combined with the wooded surroundings creates a relaxing atmosphere that feels much farther away from the city than it actually is.

Family-Friendly Trails and Easy Walking

One reason families love visiting Shore-Styers Mill Nature Park is because the trails are manageable for a wide range of ages. You’ll find:

  • Short walking trails
  • Wooded paths
  • River views
  • Picnic areas
  • Open natural spaces

The trails are relatively easy compared to larger mountain hikes, making this a great introduction to waterfall adventures for younger kids.

While some areas may be uneven or muddy after rain, most families find the walk very doable with basic walking shoes.

Picnic Areas and Relaxing Outdoor Space

We had picked up lunch at Alex’s Grill and Ice Cream on our way and set up a little picnic right next to the falls! There isn’t a ton of room on the paths, but we were able to find a spot out of the way enough that others could get past within a safe distance. It was a beautiful lunch by the water, with the calming waterfalls crashing in the background! We were, however, in the woods next to water, so don’t forget your bug spray! Because the falls are so close to the parking lot, we packed up our picnic and took it back to the car before swimming! Always be sure to clean up after yourself. There is a trash can in the parking area for your convenience.

Swimming at Shore-Styers Mill Waterfall

Swimming in the creek was a blast! Unfortunately, we did not have any water shoes, but I would highly recommend them. There is sand around the trails but once you enter the creek, it gets pretty rocky and slippery. The water around the falls is fairly shallow and we felt comfortable letting our one-year old splash around! Closer to the falls, the water gets a little bit deeper, maybe 3-4 feet at the deepest part. Many people, children and adults alike, enjoyed climbing up and down the falls. They are slippery, so use your best judgement when allowing your children to attempt this! The area is surrounded by trees, so it is partly shaded on the trails but while swimming in the falls, you are in the sunshine. Don’t forget to pack your sunscreen! I was worried initially about the falls being too crowded, but there was only ever about 20 people total (coming and going) there the entire 2 hours we stayed. We were there on a weekday, however, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets busier on the weekends!

Best Time to Visit Shacktown Falls

Spring and fall are especially beautiful times to visit Shacktown Falls. During spring, the waterfall flow is often stronger thanks to seasonal rain. In the fall, the surrounding foliage creates gorgeous colors throughout the park. Summer visits can also be enjoyable because the tree cover provides shade along portions of the trail. Visiting after rainfall usually gives the best waterfall views.

Tips for Visiting With Kids

A little preparation can make your visit much smoother, especially with younger kids. Helpful things to bring:

  • Water bottles
  • Comfortable shoes
  • Bug spray
  • Snacks or a picnic lunch
  • Extra clothes if kids get near the water

Because the park is nature-focused, there aren’t large commercial amenities nearby, so packing ahead helps.

Keeping expectations flexible also makes the outing more enjoyable. Kids often spend just as much time exploring rocks, sticks, and small creek areas as they do looking at the waterfall itself.

Why Families Love Shacktown Falls

What makes Shacktown Falls stand out is how approachable it feels. You don’t need advanced hiking experience, expensive gear, or an entire weekend to enjoy it. Families can spend a couple of relaxing hours outdoors, explore nature together, and enjoy a scenic waterfall without overwhelming logistics. For many Triad families, it’s the perfect balance between adventure and simplicity. We had a blast on our little adventure to Shacktown Falls, and I hope this will help you feel more confident in taking your family there for a little dip! Happy adventuring, friends!

*Edit* Since writing this blog, we returned to the falls for another trip and found rapids instead! I did not think about it ahead of time, but we had a lot of rain that week and the falls were flooded. Keep in mind, this is a natural water feature and can vary greatly in the depth of the water around the falls as well as the current! If we have had a lot of rain, you may want to hold off from visiting for a few days to let the water die down a bit. Please always be careful and cautious when visiting!
