BackPack Beginnings: Supporting Families Across the Triad

BackPack Beginnings: Supporting Families Across the Triad

Let’s be honest—no one could have predicted the events of 2020. If someone had told us we’d face lockdowns, supply shortages, and a global pandemic, we probably would’ve laughed it off. But when much of the world slowed down, BackPack Beginnings sprang into action. As a food and basic needs distribution site, the organization continued serving families across the Triad who needed help the most. After all, no child should face an empty plate during a crisis.

“One of my students became more social after joining the program. She speaks out and has shown academic growth.” – Johnson Street Elementary teacher

Our Mission

BackPack Beginnings’ mission is simple yet powerful: to deliver child-centric services that feed, comfort, and clothe children in need. By providing food and essential items directly to children, the organization makes a lasting impact on their health, confidence, and overall well-being.

What began in our founder’s dining room—just a few boxes of food for one school—has grown into a multi-program nonprofit helping over 12,000 children across Guilford County and surrounding areas. Today, we partner with 63 schools and 43 agencies to serve kids through:

  • Food Programs
  • Comfort Backpack Program
  • Clothing Pantry Program
  • Diaper Pantry Program
  • Book Beginnings Program
  • And more

“I came to shop for one of my students who was being teased for only wearing her brother’s hand-me-downs. I left BackPack Beginnings’ Clothing Pantry with so much pink for my student!” – Elementary School Social Worker

Powered by Volunteers

BackPack Beginnings is fueled by community kindness. Over 95% of the organization’s work is volunteer-driven. Volunteers sort clothing, pack food bags, bundle diapers, stuff comfort backpacks, and make deliveries across the Triad.

The team has worked tirelessly to ensure safety for all volunteers, following CDC guidelines and adapting operations as needed. Whether it’s a family volunteering together or local businesses hosting group service days, every helping hand makes a difference.

How to Get Involved

There are many ways families can support BackPack Beginnings:

1. Volunteer Your Time

Sign up for shifts at the warehouse to sort, pack, or deliver essential items. This is a great way for parents and teens to give back together.

2. Donate Food and Essentials

Donations are always needed—especially:

  • Non-perishable food items
  • Diapers and wipes
  • Hygiene products
  • New or gently used children’s clothing
  • Books, backpacks, and stuffed animals

You’d be surprised how many helpful items are already in your home. Even gently used toys, blankets, and books can brighten a child’s day.

3. Shop Honor Cards

Honor cards make meaningful gifts while supporting local families. They’re available for purchase at the BackPack Beginnings warehouse or at Simply Meg’s in Greensboro.

“A 4-year-old refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo loved the teddy bear! Her face lit up the moment she saw it. It was the first big smile since arriving in the country.” – NC African Services Coalition

The Ongoing Need

While the pandemic may have passed, the challenges many local families face continue. Rising costs, food insecurity, and housing instability still affect thousands of children in Guilford County and beyond.

The number of families needing assistance has grown each year, making community support more vital than ever. Your time, donations, and advocacy help ensure that children across the Triad have access to food, clothing, comfort, and hope.

Ways Local Families Can Make an Impact

  • Organize a neighborhood donation drive for diapers, food, or clothing.
  • Encourage your child’s school or sports team to host a service project for BackPack Beginnings.
  • Celebrate birthdays or milestones with a donation wish list instead of gifts.
  • Share BackPack Beginnings’ mission on social media to spread awareness.

Small actions, when multiplied across the community, make a lasting difference.
