Where to Find Thanksgiving Dinner Donations in the Triad (and How to Help Local Families)
As we get ready to gather with friends and family for a warm meal and a moment of gratitude, it’s worth remembering that many neighbors right here in the Triad won’t have the same experience. A reader named Kristen recently reached out asking if we knew of any organizations that provide Thanksgiving dinner donations in the Triad—specifically groups that allow individuals or families to “adopt” another family for the holiday weekend. While Second Harvest Food Bank came to mind, we didn’t immediately know of any adoption-style programs outside of local churches. That question sparked a little research, and it turns out there are several ways to give, support, and bless families in need this season.
Hard-to-Find “Adopt-a-Family” Options
Finding an organization that lets you personally “adopt” a local family for Thanksgiving isn’t as simple as you might expect. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina—based in Winston-Salem—is the largest hunger-relief resource in the region, serving 18 counties from Boone to Burlington. They distribute donated food and groceries to nearly 400 nonprofit partner agencies, supporting more than 680 programs including emergency pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and low-income daycare centers.
If you’re looking to volunteer or donate food directly, Second Harvest is always a solid place to start.
Ask Local Churches, Schools, and Shelters
When it comes to truly adopting a family in need for Thanksgiving, your best option is to check with local churches, schools, or community shelters. Many congregations organize Thanksgiving outreach or match families privately. These programs aren’t always advertised widely, so a quick phone call can make a big difference.
Operation Homefront North Carolina
During my search, I came across Operation Homefront North Carolina, an organization that runs the well-loved Adopt-A-Family program. This program helps donors across the state “reach out and give back” to young military families, especially around the holidays. As military families register for assistance, donors are matched with them to provide meals, gifts, and needed support. It’s a wonderful way to honor and serve those who serve all of us.
Other Local Agencies to Contact
Several other Triad-area groups run food drives and might also coordinate family adoptions if you ask:
- Salvation Army
- Rescue Mission
- Red Cross
- Urban Ministry
- Loaves & Fishes (Burlington and Alamance County)
This Christian food ministry provides groceries to families across six counties. Before moving to the Triad, I volunteered with Loaves & Fishes in Charlotte and can vouch for the impact they make.
Simple Ways to Give—No Family Adoption Needed
You don’t have to adopt a family to make a meaningful difference. Small acts add up quickly, especially during the busy holiday season. Here are several fun and easy ways to give locally:
- Rebecca & Co. and Perch (Saturday, Nov. 20): Bring three canned goods and get 25% off one regular-price item.
- World Villages in Winston-Salem (Sunday, Nov. 28): Enjoy international gifts, refreshments, and entertainment—15% of all sales benefit Second Harvest.
- Reidsville Family YMCA Thanksgiving Food Drive: Donate non-perishables through Sunday, Nov. 21.
- Borders at Thruway Shopping Center (Dec. 4–5): A portion of purchases benefits Second Harvest.
- Send holiday honor cards through Second Harvest Food Bank.
- Join the Turkey Strut 5K on Thanksgiving morning at R.J. Reynolds High School.
- Drop food donations at Harris Teeter, Lowes Foods, or Walmart—they partner with Second Harvest during the holiday season.
- Support WXII12 News + Second Harvest at a live donation drop-off.
How Else Can We Help?
Triad moms always seem to know the best local resources. If you’re aware of other organizations, schools, churches, or events offering Thanksgiving support—or if you’ve participated in a great program yourself—share your ideas in the comments. Your tip might be exactly what another family needs this year.
