How Do You Choose the Right School for Your Child
Every Child Is Unique—Their Education Should Be Too
Have you ever heard someone say, “My children are all exactly the same”? Probably not—because it’s never true. I have three children, and they are each wonderfully unique. Their learning needs, personalities, and interests differ wildly, which means they’ll need different support along their educational journeys.
Finding the right school for your child can feel overwhelming, especially when your children have diverse learning styles or specific needs. But with thoughtful planning and a willingness to ask the right questions, it’s absolutely possible.
The Problem with the Traditional School Model
The traditional school system was built during the Industrial Revolution—designed to produce uniformity and efficiency. That works well for machines, but not for growing kids. Most children today don’t thrive in a one-size-fits-all environment. My own children—like many others—would be considered “square pegs” in a round-hole model.
One of my sons is incredibly bright but also has ADD. His mind moves quickly, unpredictably, and creatively. While his potential is enormous, he doesn’t always thrive in settings that demand quiet conformity or rote memorization. It’s up to us as parents to advocate for learning environments that celebrate our children’s strengths while addressing their challenges.
What Are 21st Century Schools Doing Differently?
Schools that embrace 21st Century Skills are shifting the learning model entirely. The focus is now on critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and digital literacy. Instead of just memorizing information, students are expected to engage deeply with content, ask meaningful questions, and take ownership of their learning.
Effective schools today foster curiosity and initiative—and they do this through hands-on, differentiated instruction that supports multiple learning styles. Teachers are no longer just lecturers; they’re facilitators who help students connect the dots.
Key Questions to Ask When Choosing a School
So how do you evaluate schools for your unique child? Especially if you have more than one child with different needs? Start by researching your options, and then take time to tour schools in person. Ask detailed questions and observe the school during real-time activity—like lunch or a class change.
Here are 10 essential questions to guide your school visits:
How many students are in each class?
What does the academic curriculum include? (Ask about foreign languages, arts, technology, and physical education.
How is instruction differentiated for various learners?
How do you assess student progress and development?
What role does technology play in daily lessons?
How does this school compare in standardized test scores?
How many students does each teacher work with? (And how often do parents receive feedback?)
How successful are students in college placement? (Ask about first-choice acceptance rates and counselor-to-student ratios.)
What athletic and arts opportunities are offered, and when can students begin participating?
What measures are in place for student safety and well-being?
Trust the Process—and Trust Your Gut
We’re fortunate to live in a community with excellent academic resources for all kinds of learners. If your child has already had an educational evaluation, don’t hesitate to involve their psychologist or specialist in the school selection process. Their insights can help match your child with the right learning environment.
And remember—kids will make friends wherever they go. Your job is to find the school that will bring out the very best in each of your children. Good luck!
