The Ultimate Parenting Hack: Outdoor Showers for Kids (and More!)
Every parent dreams of it—a game-changing parenting hack that makes life with kids easier without sacrificing the fun. When one actually works? We shout it from the rooftops and hope it brings relief and joy to other families too.
My own parenting hack was sparked in 2019 while on a beach vacation. My kids loved rinsing off at the glorified spigot by the pool. Fast forward to March 2020: school was canceled, and I was running out of creative ways to keep them learning (or at least busy). So, we leaned into nature—playing outside all day, creek stomping, flipping rocks, and coming home covered in dirt. Unfortunately, that dirt ended up everywhere—especially tracked up the stairs and across the carpets. Clearly, I needed a better plan. Cue the lightbulb moment: the beach shower.
A quick chat with Google and a call to Gwyn Services, and by late spring, we had a fully functional outdoor shower. Game. Changer. Muddy kids, dirty shoes, smelly dogs, post-pool rinse-offs—our outdoor shower handled it all. And surprisingly? The installation was much more affordable than I expected.
Outdoor Shower Installation Tips
All you really need to get started is a wall. A plumber can run a water line, install a shower head and knobs, and you’re good to go. If your water heater is located in a garage or basement adjacent to an exterior wall, installation is often quick and budget-friendly. (Thanks again, Gwyn Services!)
From there, you’ll want to consider:
- Drainage: Our yard sloped naturally, so I simply added a layer of sand to direct water away from the foundation.
- Privacy: I built a quick enclosure with 4×4 posts, pallet wood, a shower rod, and a curtain.
- Flooring: We placed a wooden pallet down and topped it with teakwood shower tiles (yes, Amazon came through!).
Our total cost? Under $700.
Customize to Fit Your Family
If you want a more polished look, there are tons of add-ons and options:
- Drainage Upgrades: French drains or concrete pads.
- Privacy Upgrades: Hedges, bamboo panels, kits from hardware stores, or custom carpentry.
- Placement: Try to build it near a door—so clean feet don’t end up muddy again before getting inside!
This doesn’t have to be a Pinterest-perfect spa experience. Our goal was functional, family-friendly, and simple. And it worked beautifully.

FAQs About Outdoor Showers for Families
Is an outdoor shower expensive to install?
Not necessarily. If your home’s water heater is close to an exterior wall, installation is often under $1,000. DIY versions can be even less, especially if you skip drainage systems and pour pads.
Do you need a permit to install an outdoor shower?
Check with your local municipality. In many areas, a simple outdoor rinse station doesn’t require a permit—especially if it doesn’t tie into your home’s drainage.
What’s the best location for an outdoor shower?
Near an exterior wall with plumbing access. Make sure it’s close to a door, has privacy, and won’t cause drainage issues near your foundation.
What materials work well for an outdoor shower?
PVC pipes, stainless steel shower heads, teak or cedar wood, sand or gravel bases, and water-resistant curtains all hold up well outdoors.
Can I use an outdoor shower in winter?
In colder climates, you’ll need to winterize it by turning off the water supply and draining the pipes. Some homeowners add insulated fixtures or frost-proof plumbing for year-round use.
