Playful Otters at the North American River Otter Exhibit
A favorite for kids and adults alike, the River Otters is full of energy and fun. This thoughtfully designed habitat includes two large pools, two smaller pools, a waterfall, and even a bamboo raft where the otters love to float and play. The four otters stay active with daily enrichment activities that encourage natural behaviors like climbing, swimming, and foraging. You can often catch them darting through water, hiding in large hollow logs, or snuggling in their cozy nest.
The Living Shipwreck
One of the most exciting exhibits at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is the Living Shipwreck. A 306,000-gallon saltwater habitat and the largest manmade ocean exhibit in the state. This massive aquarium centerpiece holds a life-sized replica of the U-352 German submarine, which was sunk off the coast of North Carolina in 1942 by the U.S. Coast Guard. The real U-352 lies 115 feet beneath the ocean surface and is now a popular diving site along North Carolina’s “Graveyard of the Atlantic.”

the Queen Anne’s Revenge Exhibit
Step into a slice of pirate history at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores with the Queen Anne’s Revenge exhibit. This 50,000-gallon habitat recreates the underwater debris field believed to be the final resting place of Blackbeard’s legendary ship. Discovered off the coast of North Carolina, the real Queen Anne’s Revenge has fascinated divers and historians alike.
Inside the exhibit, you’ll find fish that naturally inhabit the dive site, including sheepshead, swimming among realistic replicas of ship anchors and other artifacts. Adding to the authenticity, the exhibit also features real ballast stones from the actual Queen Anne’s Revenge. These stones are on loan from the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort and sit just outside the tank for visitors to view up close.
Fossil Hunt
Outside kids can dig through the sand and seashells to find shark teeth and fossils. This was one of the highlights for my 5 year old. It is right next to the Dairy Queen, so parents can grab a treat and relax on the nearby picnic tables while the kids have fun digging.

The Loggerhead Odyssey exhibit at the Aquarium takes visitors on an unforgettable adventure through the life cycle of the loggerhead sea turtle. The trail provides a nice opportunity to stretch your legs and enjoy the coastal environment after spending time indoors. Visitors can enjoy two scenic trails during their trip. The Roosevelt Nature Trail, accessible from the aquarium parking lot, winds through shaded forest full of native plants and birdsong. The Alice Hoffman Trail starts at the Salt marsh Boardwalk and offers marsh views along with educational signage.

This land was donated to the state in 1971 by descendants of President Theodore Roosevelt, who insisted it be preserved for nature study and wildlife education. The aquarium’s surroundings are a living tribute to President Roosevelt’s lifelong commitment to the environment. Alice Hoffman originally owned the land and passed it to her niece, who was married to Theodore Roosevelt Jr. Their donation helped ensure this slice of North Carolina’s coast remains wild and wonderful for generations to come.

My Review of the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores
We’ve visited the aquarium several times during Crystal Coast vacations, and it continues to be one of our favorite family attractions near Emerald Isle. The highlight for our family is always the large ocean exhibit filled with sharks, sea turtles, and colorful fish. The underwater viewing windows give kids a chance to watch marine life swimming overhead, and it’s often the exhibit where we spend the most time. We also love the touch tank area, where children can interact with marine animals in a safe and educational environment. What makes this aquarium especially appealing for families is that it’s large enough to keep everyone entertained but manageable enough that you don’t feel rushed or exhausted by the end of your visit.
