Weekend Trip to Williamsburg, VA

If you’re looking for a fun and educational weekend escape from the Triad, Williamsburg, Virginia should be at the top of your list. When I was little, we lived in Maryland and often traveled to Washington DC and other historic spots in Virginia. One of my mom’s favorite destinations was Williamsburg, VA—and it’s easy to see why! It’s grown a lot since those days, but still offers that perfect blend of charm, history, and family fun. You could make it a day trip if you’re feeling ambitious, but a relaxing a weekend trip to Williamsburg is definitely the way to go.
How to Get to Williamsburg from the Triad
Getting to Williamsburg from North Carolina’s Triad area takes about 4 to 5 hours depending on traffic and your starting point. Once you arrive, you’ll find yourself in a unique place where modern attractions meet 18th-century history, creating a one-of-a-kind vacation experience.
Where to Stay in Williamsburg
When planning your Williamsburg family vacation, consider what attractions are on your list. Colonial Williamsburg is the nation’s largest living history museum and is especially fun with kids. If this is your main destination, choose one of the 4–5 hotels within walking distance of the historic area. Most are family-friendly and offer amenities like pools and complimentary breakfasts. The area also has several hotel chains, quaint bed and breakfasts, VRBO’s and even a couple of luxury resorts if you’re planning a kid-free trip.
