Competition with Character: 5 Things to Know about YMCA

By Chelsea Joslyn , Communications Director of NW YMCA

There is something for every kid at the Y. Just because winter is around the corner it’s not time to hibernate! There are great ways to stay active throughout the season. At the Y, we are as interested in developing character as we are in developing healthy athletes. With winter sports registration going on now, we wanted to share five things every parent should know about sports at the Y:

1. Everyone Plays. Kids don’t get cut from YMCA Youth Sports. During the season, everyone receives equal practice time and plays at least half of every game.

2. Safety First. Although children may get hurt playing sports, we do all we can to prevent injuries. We work to make each sport as safe as it can be and fun to play.

3. Character Development. The YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith are highlighted each week to teach kids competition with character. YMCA coaches are role models and each game begins with a devotion.

4. Family Involvement. Parents are encouraged to be involved. In addition to parents helping as volunteer coaches, officials, and timekeepers, we encourage them to be at practices and games to support their child’s participation.

5. Sports for all. Everyone is welcome and included at the Y. We offer programs to all children regardless of their race, gender, religion, or ability. We encourage children to appreciate diversity.

Now it’s time for some winter sports fun! Click here to learn more about youth sports at the Y and see registration deadlines at your local YMCA. Branches across Northwest North Carolina are registering now for basketball for all ages, as well as indoor soccer, volleyball, Tae Kwon Do, indoor lacrosse, and more at various locations.
