How family-friendly workplaces support parents

by Candace Martin, Operations and Communications Manager of Action Greensboro

As Oprah says, “The hardest job on Earth is being a parent.”

This is especially true if your partner isn’t getting the support they need from their employer. Whether it’s paid paternal leave, healthcare benefits and/or flexible scheduling — your job as a mom becomes even harder.

At Family Forward NC®, we’re on a mission to help companies and businesses across the state promote family-friendly policies. Why?

We hear too many moms saying things like:

  • “I wish every dad had real paternity leave like they do in other countries. Those early weeks are so special and important for bonding — both parents should have that time.”
  • “Companies need to realize that fathers are parents.”
  • “Flexible schedules aren’t just about childcare. They’re about dads being able to make it to school events, doctor’s appointments and sick days.”

So far, more than 69 companies in Greensboro are Certified. These organizations support more than 31,980 employees across the Greater Greensboro area, reinforcing our city’s dedication to creating a workplace culture that prioritizes the well-being of employees and their families.

Greensboro will be recognized as the first-ever Family Forward NC Certified Community this April. But our work isn’t done. We need more moms to get involved in our advocacy work.

If you have a minute, talk to your partner today to show them what it takes to get certified.
