Free Spring Activities for Families in the Triad
As spring blooms across the Triad, it’s the perfect time to head outside and soak up some sunshine with your family. And the best part? You don’t have to spend a dime to have a memorable day together. From nature adventures to community events, there are tons of free spring activities near—especially right here in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, exploring local parks, or diving into hands-on learning experiences, here are our favorite free things to do in the Triad this spring.
Outdoor Parks and Nature Trails
One of the easiest and most rewarding family-friendly things to do in spring is enjoying the great outdoors. The Triad is packed with beautiful parks , greenways, and nature trails that are perfect for a day of exploring.
Picnic in the Park
Let’s start with a classic: Picnics in local parks! Pack up some sandwiches, grab a blanket, and head to your favorite green space. Winston-Salem’s Reynolda Gardens could be a good place to start, or head over to the Greensboro Arboretum, Country Park, or City Lake Park. Splash Pads
Want to add some water fun? Many area parks have free splash pad that open around May. These are all ideal for outdoor spring fun with kids. Some favorite parks with splash pads are Keely Park, LeBauer Park, and Happy Hills park.

Go for a Hike!
Another wonderful, free activity is nature walks and hikes. The Triad area has numerous trails that cater to all skill levels. A nature walk or a hike is a great way to explore the beauty of Spring, listen to the birds chirping, and discover hidden gems along the way. Consider visiting the trails at Pilot Mountain State Park for a more scenic experience. Tanglewood Park offers a variety of trails, ranging from easy walks to more moderate hikes. Local Libraries
When the April showers hit, local libraries can provide endless hours of entertainment for both you and your little ones! Nearly every branch offers free storytime sessions for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers, along with crafts, STEM kits, and other drop-in programs. There are almost too many options when it comes to library storytimes, so we’ve created a little cheatsheet!
Local Farmers Markets
Additionally, don’t forget about local farmers markets! For example, the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market often hosts family activities, music performances, and other free entertainment during the spring months. It’s a great way to support local farmers and introduce your children to the importance of fresh, seasonal food. Here are some of our favorite farmers markets in the area!
Free Museums and Educational Activities
Did you know you can check out museum passes at many of our local libraries? Offerings include places like the Greensboro Science Center, a fantastic spot for kids to learn about wildlife, ecology, and science.

Another is the Reynolda House Museum of American Art. Weren’t able to snag a pass? No problem! Kids under 18 are always free, and Reynolda regularly offers free admission days. GreenHill’s First Fridays is an excellent opportunity to introduce your family to the world of art and culture while enjoying a leisurely afternoon. You could also walk around Old Salem for free without doing the Tour.

And if it’s a rainy Friday, head to the Life Community Church playground, open and free to the public from 9 am-12 pm!
