Family Fun Day at high point city lake park
If you’re looking for a fun and affordable day trip for kids in North Carolina, City Lake Park in High Point, NC is a must-visit. This park is packed with family-friendly attractions including an inclusive playground, scenic lake with boating and fishing, mini golf, a charming carousel, train rides, and more. Attractions typically run on weekends during the off-season and are open daily in summer. This recent visit made a huge impression on my 3-year-old—and turned a typical park visit into a full-blown adventure.
City Lake Park Train Ride
The City Lake Park train circles a section of the playground and waterfront. The figure-eight track includes a tunnel and scenic lake views, making it a memorable experience for little ones. My son loved every minute and talked about the train the rest of the day.

The Carousel and Inclusive Playground
The vintage carousel adds a nostalgic charm, even if it’s showing its age. Located right in front of the fenced-in inclusive playground, it’s a convenient transition from ride to free play. The playground is spacious, shaded, and features equipment designed for multiple age groups. From the fire truck climber to bucket swings, there’s something for everyone.
Mini Golf at City Lake Park
Mini golf fans will love the 18-hole course at City Lake Park. My toddler was thrilled from the moment we arrived. We got there right at 10 a.m. when attractions open, ensuring plenty of time for fun before nap time. Mini golf tickets can be purchased at the concession stand, which also provides clubs and balls. You can add in mini golf for only $1.75 to your daily discount ticket. The course is compact but creatively designed—perfect for young kids and still fun for adults.

Picnic and Marina Views
We paused for a snack break and enjoyed nachos from the concession stand and some snacks we brought from home. There are plenty of picnic tables and a large pavilion available for public use unless reserved. Afterward, we strolled the marina area for views of Arnold J. Koonce, Jr. City Lake, geese, and ducks. Pontoon, Paddle boat, and canoe rentals are available during the warmer months—another great reason to visit in summer.
At the High Point City Lake Park Marina, you can rent canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards—perfect for enjoying a calm day on the water. Rentals must be returned one hour before closing. You can also launch your own boat for a small fee, as long as it has a 9.9 horsepower motor or less. Private boats must be off the lake 30 minutes before closing.
The marina also offers convenient amenities like fishing bait, tackle, snacks, and even North Carolina fishing licenses, making it a one-stop shop for your lake day. Want a group outing? Pontoon boat tours for up to 30 passengers are available and offer a relaxing way to enjoy the lake with friends or family.
