We stayed at The Rochambeau – A Charming Family Base
If you’re looking for a hotel that’s as thoughtful as your itinerary, The Rochambeau is a great choice for families visiting Williamsburg. Located just minutes from Colonial Williamsburg, this recently renovated boutique inn blends vintage charm with modern comfort at an affordable price. It was recently featured by Travel + Leisure in its 2026 “50 Best Places to Go” list.
“There’s no shortage of charming hotel options, but catching the eye of T+L editors for 2026 is the newly renovated Rochambeau Roadside Inn, a boutique hotel with 22 vintage-inspired rooms and suites, including some with cute bunk beds.” — Travel + Leisure
From the moment you pull into the lot, The Rochambeau feels cozy, warm, and full of intention. Our room included a thoughtful surprise: s’mores kits waiting for us to enjoy, which added a fun touch to our stay with the kids. They had a fire pit outside for a fun way to end our night!
With a location close to everything, vintage décor, family-friendly suites, and a genuinely welcoming vibe, The Rochambeau made our Williamsburg weekend that much more memorable.
Tips: Don’t miss the storage shed with some other fun things you can borrow like a bike or Corn hole set (or whatever your choice of name is for that game! haha). They also had an EV charging station and water bottle refill station!

Day One: Explore Colonial Williamsburg with Kids
Our first day focused on Colonial Williamsburg, one of the most iconic attractions in Virginia. One thing many families don’t realize is that you can explore much of the outdoor historic area for free. While Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket is required for many of the historic buildings and special programs, simply walking through the streets feels like stepping back in time. Since our children are still young, we focused on outdoor experiences rather than spending long periods inside museums or tours.
Colonial Williamsburg Highlights For Kids:
Walk Along Duke of Gloucester Street
The heart of Colonial Williamsburg is Duke of Gloucester Street. This wide, stroller-friendly street is lined with historic buildings, costumed interpreters, shops, and demonstrations. Our kids loved watching people dressed in colonial clothing and stopping to browse the various market vendors along the way. One of our favorite purchases was a wooden flute that the kids happily played as we explored the historic district.
Don’t Miss the Horse-Drawn Carriage Ride

Without question, the highlight of Colonial Williamsburg for our children was the horse-drawn carriage ride. The ride lasts about 15 minutes and provides a unique perspective of the historic area. A helpful tip for families: carriage rides are not included with Colonial Williamsburg admission. Tickets must be purchased separately at the Lumber House Ticket Office on Duke of Gloucester Street. Arrive at the ticket center when it opens in the morning. Tickets often sell out very quickly, sometimes within the first hour, especially on weekends and during events.
Live Reenactments & the Fifes & Drums
Live Reenactments: Catch short shows like “The Gale from the North” outside Raleigh Tavern and interactive moments like Meet a Person of the Past. One of the most exciting moments of the day was following the Fifes & Drums through town. The music immediately grabs kids’ attention, and watching the performers march through the historic streets creates a memorable experience that feels straight out of a movie.
Visit the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg
If you’re looking for a free activity that also gives everyone a break from walking, stop by the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg. The exhibits are fascinating, but our children especially enjoyed the coloring area designed for younger visitors.

Day Two: Outdoor adventure at Waller Mill Park and York River State Park and a Hidden Gem
After spending our first day immersed in history, we balanced things out with a mix of educational experiences and outdoor exploration.
Fossil Hunting at York River State Park’s Fossil Beach

One of our favorite discoveries during the trip was York River State Park. The park offers beautiful scenery, easy trails, and access to Fossil Beach, which quickly became a family favorite. Children love searching for fossils, seashells, shark teeth. Although our visit took place during cooler weather, we’d absolutely return during warmer months when the kids could spend more time exploring along the shoreline.

Paddle Boats at Waller Mill Park
Another highlight was Waller Mill Park. After warming up with hot cocoa, we rented paddle boats and spent time enjoying the peaceful lake views. The park also features: walking trails, picnic areas, restroom facilities, fishing opportunities.

They only offer these about 8 times a year so plan ahead! President’s Heads Exhibit Info Here.
