There’s something truly magical about fall in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Hendersonville, NC, might just be the perfect place to soak it all in. Between crisp mountain air, vibrant fall foliage, charming small-town vibes, and a calendar full of family-friendly fun, it was the ideal getaway for our family.

My daughter had no school on Friday, so we took advantage of the long weekend and headed out right after she got home Thursday. We visited Hendersonville from September 25–28, 2025, and had a flexible but fun-packed itinerary with help from some wonderful local hosts. Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning for more, this guide has everything you need to plan your family fall trip to Hendersonville complete with travel tips, must-dos, and local gems.

Where We Stayed: Brightwaters Vacation Rentals

We arrived Thursday evening and checked into our Mountain Lily Cabin at Brightwaters Vacation Rentals (202 Tioga Trail). While it’s not a luxury resort, this peaceful cabin gave us everything we needed. It was clean, comfortable, had a full kitchen, and a central location close to all our adventures.

What made it extra special was the history woven into the property. The Brightwaters Guesthouse, originally built in 1938, was part of a much larger mountain resort called Brightwaters Estates. Founder Samuel Childs created this retreat as a cool, scenic escape for families with an 8-bedroom guesthouse, a lodge and dining room, and 25 cottages spread across 400 acres.

Today, that legacy lives on. As a fun bonus, the property even features its very own bear from the Bearfootin’ Art Walk. These painted bears are part of a public art trail that raise money for Friends of Downtown Hendersonville and a variety of local nonprofits. There are more than 20 colorfully decorated bear statues scattered throughout downtown Hendersonville. It was a fun preview before we explored the full Bearfootin’ walking tour later in the trip!

Tip: Bring conditioner and/or face wash. There was shampoo and body wash.

Dinner at Uncle Scott’s Pizza

After settling into our cozy cabin at Brightwaters Vacation Rentals, we headed about 10 minutes down the road to Uncle Scott’s Pizza (1735 Brevard Rd) for an easy and satisfying dinner. The atmosphere was casual and family-friendly, just what we needed after a day of travel. We tried the BBQ chicken pizza, and it was absolutely delicious. What made the experience even sweeter? The incredibly kind staff surprised our girls with warm chocolate chip cookies as we were leaving. It was such a thoughtful touch and really set the tone for the local hospitality we’d experience all weekend.

Tip: Stock up on groceries at Ingles nearby (same shopping center as Uncle Scott’s Pizza) for breakfast and snacks for the rest of the week!

Day 1: Orchards, Vineyards, Gems & Local Bites

Morning at Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard

We started the day with fresh mountain air and apple picking at Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard, a local, family-run farm (170 Stepp Orchard Dr). The kids had a blast choosing apples right from the trees, navigating the corn maze, picking sunflowers, and just being out in nature. For more details about our visit to Stepp’s check out our blog Visiting Stepp’s Hillcrest Orchard: Tips, Activities & What to Expect

Tip: On weekends, they offer apple cannons! Bring rainboots or waterproof shoes!

Point Lookout Vineyards

Just a short drive away, we headed to Point Lookout Vineyards (408 Appleola Rd). Perched at 3,000 feet with panoramic mountain views, this winery offered tastings with both dry and semi-sweet options. Perfect spot for sipping while the kids enjoyed a snack and the fresh breeze. It had such amazing views. There was also a Little Free Library outside surrounded by chairs. I even happend to find a book that just happened to be in my Amazon cart which was a nice surprise! Such a peaceful location to sit and read.

Lunch at The Book & Bee

We spent the afternoon at The Book & Bee, an English Style Café and Tea Room in Hendersonville, NC, and it felt like a storybook come to life.

Address: 795 Mountain Rd, Hendersonville, NC 28791

We sipped on fruity green tea with mango flavor, warmed up with lobster bisque and broccoli cheddar soup, and indulged in the Alchemist sandwich (meatloaf, sauerkraut, Havarti, and sauce on sunflower bread). The chicken salad sandwich and the Queen of Hearts Salad with spinach, herbed pecans, strawberries, apples, feta, and apple pecan vinaigrette were just as tasty.

The table next to us ordered the Afternoon Tea ($51 per person, includes tax and tip), and it looked like a fun experience with three tiers of finger sandwiches, scones with jam, lemon curd, Devonshire cream, and sweet treats. Gluten-free and vegetarian trays are available upon request at booking.

Whether you’re planning a girls’ day, family outing, or simply craving a charming escape, The Book & Bee is worth the stop!

Elijah Mountain Gem Mine

Our afternoon was spent at Elijah Mountain Gem Mine (2120 Brevard Rd). It’s way more than just mining. The kids panned for gems while we relaxed nearby, said hello to goats and peacocks, and even found a local brewery outpost for the grownups. A hidden gem for sure!

Dinner at Ecusta Market & Café

Right on the Ecusta Trail at Lennox Station, Ecusta Market & Café is the perfect neighborhood gathering spot. We stopped in and fell in love with everything from the cozy pumpkin spice latte to the crave-worthy smash burger, the fresh Big Crunchy Salad with avocado, and the wholesome Bounty Bowl. Every bite was delicious!

What makes it even better? It’s super kid-friendly! Inside the market, little ones can enjoy a kids’ play area, while outside there’s a playground out back so parents can sip, snack, and relax while the kids burn off energy.

Inside the market, you’ll find local meats, produce, dairy, small-batch goods, and curated gifts. They have over 100 Western North Carolina brands held in store. These are perfect for taking a piece of Hendersonville home with you. The café serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, with counter service, craft coffee, incredible pastries, and even local beer & wine. Whether you’re fueling up for the trail, catching up with friends, or winding down after a busy day, this spot feels like home.

Day 2: Waterfalls, Museums & Main Street Magic

Looking Glass Falls – A Must-See from the Roadside

We started our morning with a short scenic drive into Pisgah National Forest to visit Looking Glass Falls, one of the most iconic and easily accessible waterfalls in Western North Carolina. Located right off US-276, this stunning waterfall is visible from the road. It is perfect if you’re traveling with little ones or just want a quick, unforgettable stop. There’s a viewing platform and steps down to the base if you want to get closer.

Tip: Arrive early to avoid crowds and enjoy the falls in a more serene setting.

Sliding Rock

We hit the road early to visit Sliding Rock and Looking Glass Falls (Pisgah Hwy). These natural wonders are a must-see. The kids were mesmerized by the water rushing over the rocks, and we even dipped our feet in for a brisk wake-up! We were too chilly to fully go in, but maybe during a summer trip! It is about 8ft at the deepest part at the bottom of the sliding rock.

Admission: $5 per person from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Bathrooms aren’t available during times when there is no admission. Bring towels, lifevests for the kids, and water shoes!

Lunch at Mike’s on Main

Address: 303 N Main St, Hendersonville, NC 28792

After returning to our cabin to shower and rest for a few minutes, we headed to Mike’s on Main. You step back in time at this retro soda shop where old-school charm meets comfort food classics. We dug into a hearty Reuben and Philly cheese steak, cooled off with the sweetest soda float, and the kids loved their meals that came with smiley fries. The staff was so welcoming, making it the kind of spot you’ll want to come back to again and again.

The owner’s son had also shared with me he was working on adding some fun things to the restaurant. He would like to get Mike’s on Main qualified as a museum. There will be an app to scan QR codes around the restaurant to learn history. They are also hoping to have a speakeasy and some mommy and me tea parties in their upstairs.

Hands On! Children’s Museum

Right up the block, Hands On! Children’s Museum was an interactive treat. The kids built, climbed, played, and learned all in one place while we enjoyed a moment to sit and relax nearby. The Museum is a must-visit for families. From the Art & Sensory Studio to the Giant Light Bright and Pet Vet Hospital, every corner encourages kids to learn through play.

Address: 318 North Main Street, Hendersonville, North Carolina 28792

Tips for visiting: Plan at least 2 hours so your kids can explore every exhibit. Bring socks—some play areas require them! Parking is available nearby on Main Street. Check their calendar for special programs and events.

Dinner & Dessert: Harry’s Grill & Piggy’s Ice Cream

We finished our day at Harry’s Grill & Piggy’s Ice Cream. This place is a true Hendersonville classic. With over 40 years of family tradition, this spot has been serving up comfort food favorites and sweet treats since 1979.

Step inside and you’ll find walls and ceilings covered in antiques. It’s like dining in a museum filled with local history and charm. Some of our favorites? The Brunswick stew, BBQ platter, corn fritters, and fried okra. They were all packed with flavor and southern charm. And don’t forget to finish with an ice cream cone or a banana split from Piggy’s Ice Cream, open year-round! Harry’s Grill and Piggy’s Ice Cream is one of 13 stops along the Hendersonville Ice Cream Trail!

Address: 102 Duncan Hill Rd, Hendersonville, NC

Day 3: Departure & Goodbyes

We checked out of our cozy cabin at 10 a.m., but couldn’t resist one last local stop before heading home, HenDough Chicken & Donuts. This place is known for its mouthwatering combination of fried chicken and fresh-made donuts, and it did not disappoint.

We had a savory smothered chicken biscuit and shared a chocolate donut and apple strudel donut. A sweet and savory sendoff that made saying goodbye to Hendersonville just a little bit harder.
