Whether you want laid-back beach days or a vacation filled with family-friendly outings, Oak Island makes a great coastal getaway for families.

Why Families Love Oak Island

Oak Island is known for its slower pace, wide sandy beaches, and relaxed atmosphere that feels much calmer than many larger beach destinations in North Carolina.

Families love:

  • Spacious beaches
  • Easy beach access points
  • Fishing and crabbing opportunities
  • Kid-friendly parks
  • Nearby restaurants and ice cream shops
  • Outdoor activities without heavy crowds
  • Guided Bike Tours

One thing many visitors don’t realize is that Oak Island is also the closest beach to the town of Southport, making it easy to combine beach time with shopping, museums, and waterfront exploring.

Where We Stayed: The Beach House Motel & Suites

We stayed at Beach House Motel & Suites at Oak Island and found it to be a great option for families. The location was one of the biggest perks. We were within walking distance of the beach and several restaurants, making it easy to leave the car parked.

The property also offers:

  • A swimming pool
  • Complimentary bikes
  • Beach chairs available to borrow
  • Convenient beach access

These extra amenities helped make our stay even more enjoyable and saved us from packing additional gear.

Visit the Oak Island Lighthouse and Caswell Beach

No trip to Oak Island is complete without seeing the iconic Oak Island Lighthouse. Located near Caswell Beach, the lighthouse is one of the area’s most recognizable landmarks and offers incredible coastal views.

Families with older children may enjoy climbing to the top on a guided tour. Tours are available year-round with advance reservations and often book several weeks in advance during summer and holiday periods. Climbers must be at least 9 years old, and tours are offered in the mornings.

From May through September, tours are typically available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. During the fall and winter months, tours are generally offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Even if you don’t take a tour, it’s worth stopping by to see the lighthouse and explore nearby Caswell Beach, which tends to be quieter than some of the busier sections of Oak Island.

Tip: Make sure to walk across the street along the boardwalk that shares info about wildlife along it and grab a picture of the best view of the lighthouse from the beach.

Cool Off at the Splashpad at Middleton Park

One of the best family-friendly spots on the island is Middleton Park. The Splashpad at Middleton Park is perfect for hot beach days when kids need a break from the sand and saltwater. Families can also enjoy:

  • Playground areas
  • Green space
  • Picnic areas
  • Seasonal summer concerts

Town of Oak Island Summer Concert Series

The Oak Island summer concert series takes place here throughout the season and creates a fun community atmosphere for families. For 15 weeks on Fridays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Middleton Park Amphitheater there is a free outdoor concert.

Hunt for the Famous Driftwood Sculptures

One of the most unique things to do on Oak Island is searching for the famous driftwood sculptures hidden along the shoreline. Created from natural materials found on the beach, these whimsical creatures have become a favorite photo opportunity for visitors.

Part of the fun is finding them. Keep in mind there is no dedicated parking directly beside the sculptures, but you’ll find public beach access parking areas just a short walk away in either direction. Kids love looking at the different creations, and it turns a simple beach walk into a fun scavenger hunt.

Explore the Oak Island Nature Center

The Oak Island Nature Center opens Memorial Day weekend and gives families a chance to learn more about local wildlife, coastal habitats, and the island’s natural environment. The nature center helps add variety to a traditional beach vacation.

This is a great stop for:

  • Nature-loving kids
  • Rainy beach days
  • Educational outings
  • Short breaks from the sun

Oak Island Nature Center is Open Wednesday – Friday 10-2pm

Go Crabbing on Oak Island

One of the most memorable family activities on Oak Island is crabbing. Kids love the excitement of checking traps and spotting crabs along the water. It’s inexpensive, interactive, and feels like a classic coastal vacation activity. These locations are peaceful and scenic while still being easy for families to access.

Popular local crabbing spots include:

  • Heron Lookout – SE 40th Street at Davis Creek
  • 78th Street Crab Dock – NE 78th Street at Yacht Drive

Where We Ate

Ruby’s Coffeehouse & Eatery

We loved breakfast at Ruby’s Coffeehouse & Eatery. The bacon, egg, and cheese bagel was delicious, and the avocado toast was fresh and flavorful. The kids enjoyed the French toast, and the Snickers latte was a fun treat for the adults.

Thai Noodle House Cuisine

For dinner, Thai Noodle House Cuisine was a standout. The Drunken Noodles were packed with flavor, and the frozen mango boba was the perfect refreshing drink after a long day at the beach.

Grab Ice Cream at OKI Scoop Shop & Donuts

After a day at the beach, make a stop at OKI Scoop Shop & Donuts. This local favorite serves ice cream, donuts, and sweet treats that are perfect after a hot day in the sun. It’s an easy family stop and quickly became one of our favorite treats during our stay.

Fuel Up at Island Jo Coffee & Café

For coffee lovers, Island Jo Coffee & Café is worth a visit. In addition to great coffee and breakfast options, they also have a free little library inside, which was a fun surprise. It’s a cozy place to start the day before heading out to explore the island.
