Best Things to Do in Burlington NC with Kids

The Burlington City Park Carousel is a beloved local landmark, and this beautifully restored, historic carousel is a must-visit. It’s not just a ride; it’s a nostalgic experience that transports kids and adults alike. Right next door, you’ll find kiddie rides, a miniature train, and a playground that’s perfect for little climbers. City Park itself is sprawling and offers a variety of play structures that cater to different ages and abilities. Mature trees offer ample shade, a welcome relief during warmer months. Plus, the park often hosts community events and festivals, so keep an eye on their schedule for extra fun! For instance, every year the town hosts the Burlington Carousel Festival here – If you’re lucky enough to visit in May, definitely check it out!

Children’s Museum of Alamance County

Hands-on learning takes center stage at the Children’s Museum of Alamance County. This engaging space is packed with interactive exhibits designed to spark creativity and critical thinking in young minds. There’s an entire miniature town little ones will love, featuring a mini post office, dinner, and grocery store. Outdoors there’s a seasonal water play area and lots of places to climb and run. My daughter’s favorite part of the museum is a tall glass enclosure where you walk in, and paint right on the glass! Parents will love the photo ops this presents, as well as the fact that the museum employees handle cleanup! It’s ideal for preschool and elementary-aged children, and the majority of offerings are indoors—so it’s a lifesaver on rainy or hot days.

Animal Encounters at Conservators Center

For the animal lovers in your crew, a trip to the Conservators Center in nearby Caswell County is an absolute must. This non-profit organization is dedicated to rescuing and providing a forever home for exotic animals. Imagine your kids’ faces as they get up close (safely!) to lions, tigers, and lemurs. It’s an educational experience disguised as an adventure! Guided tours offer fascinating insights into these incredible creatures and the importance of conservation.

Alamance Battleground State Historic Site

For a blend of history and outdoor adventure, take a trip to the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site. Kids can roam the open grounds, explore old structures, and learn about colonial-era North Carolina. It’s a peaceful, uncrowded spot to let kids burn off some energy while sneaking in a bit of history.

Everyday Fun Things in Burlington, NC with Kids

Burlington Sock Puppets Baseball Game

Introduce the kids to America’s pastime with a Burlington Sock Puppets minor league baseball game. The stadium is small enough to feel intimate and safe, but big enough to bring major excitement. With kid-friendly concessions, between-inning games, and themed nights, it’s an awesome outing for the whole family.

Downtown Burlington Walking Tour

Transform a simple walk into an adventure by exploring Downtown Burlington! Discover local murals, treat yourselves to ice cream at a café (we like Smitty’s Homemade Ice Cream), and pop into boutiques or bookshops to browse. Visit the “Heart of Downtown” and check out the hundreds of customized locks already placed on this beautiful metal monument – Then order and place your own! Tip: Learn from my mistake and be sure to order your custom lock far enough in advance, a couple of weeks before your visit! Finally, if you have any budding engineers or train enthusiasts in the family, a visit to the Burlington Historic Depot is in order. While it’s not a play place, the beautifully preserved architecture and the history surrounding the depot can be captivating. You can often see trains passing by, which is always a thrill for the little ones. It’s a great opportunity to talk about transportation and Burlington’s past.

Alamance County Public Library Summer Programs

Don’t forget about Alamance County Public Libraries, which offer amazing summer reading programs and year-round kids’ events. In particular, I have to highlight the May Memorial Library. They have an adorable children’s section at the back, complete with a sunroom-turned-playroom! On our most recent visit, my daughter was excited to take part in the scavenger hunt they were currently holding in the library, and of course we had to sign up to read to the therapy dogs (Paws for Reading is the program name, get more information and sign up at your local branch). From engaging storytimes and puppet shows to creative craft sessions, the library has a wealth of free, educational, and enriching activities.
