Through large windows, you can see the actual production floor: massive stainless steel equipment, workers in white coats, and giant vats of milk being transformed into cheese. This franchised store had just opened when we first visited the town, and they were already hopping! The owner warmly greeted us and made sure we had a great experience. We will be back!

One of West Jefferson’s hidden gems is this small mountain church famous for its stunning fresco paintings. If you want a mountain escape that feels authentic instead of touristy, where the drive time from the Triad is reasonable, and where your family will genuinely talk about the trip for years? West Jefferson deserves a spot on your NC family travel list.
We had the best spontaneous visit to an area that has now become one of our favorites. We have returned several times since our first visit, and will continue to frequent this lovely mountain community and enjoy its many charms.
