But when a friend raved about West Jefferson, NC, a tiny mountain town in Ashe County, we decided to venture off the beaten path. Three hours north of the Triad, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, West Jefferson is the kind of place that doesn’t make it into most guidebooks.

North Carolina’s oldest and largest cheese manufacturer since 1930. Located at 106 E Main St, West Jefferson, watch cheese being made in their factory viewing room and browse over 20 varieties of original Ashe County Cheese, fresh country butter, fresh fudge, hand-dipped ice cream, and a “Kandy Korner” with over 150 varieties of candies. Also carries NC wines and imported cheeses.
