Doing Good Things: Family Room

Who Is Family Room?

Family Room is a resource center for families that foster and children in foster care.

What Does Family Room Do?

  • For babies, kids, and teens coming into a new foster home, often with little to nothing, Family Room is an immediate resource that provides them and the families caring for them with everything they need at no cost to the foster parents.
  • Some of the items provided to them are beds, dressers, car seats, clothes, shoes, toys, school supplies, formula and diapers, groceries, and more.  We are also here for them as they get to know the children and find there may be other items they need to help support the children.

Who Does Family Room Help

  • In 2023, 571 babies, kids and teens were supported as they entered a new foster home, and several hundred more were supported with follow-up needs.
  • Families fostering babies can receive cribs, car seats, strollers, baby supplies, diapers, formula, and more. School-aged children and teens can receive a bed of their own, clothes and toys, school supplies, and more.
  • Our vision is a world where every person in every community supports children in foster care. We believe not everyone can foster but everyone can help. The community can help by volunteering, donating items foster families need and the greatest need is to give a financial gift.

Why Does Family Room help?

  • The Founder of Family Room, a former foster parent who adopted two children from foster care, experienced firsthand the essential role of community support for families fostering children. She witnessed the gap in resources available to these families and the critical need for children entering foster care to have their own belongings from day one. Driven by this vision, she founded Family Room in 2018 to meet these needs and provide a way for everyone in the community to contribute.  Family Room ensures that no foster family has to turn down a placement due to financial limitations, and no child goes without essential items. Not one day should a child in a new foster home ever have to sleep on a couch because a bed isn’t immediately available. Not one day should a child in foster care have to wear borrowed clothes or borrowed toys waiting for state financial support. Every child entering a foster home deserves a dignified experience with their own items. Family Room is dedicated to making this a reality so foster parents can say “yes” to providing a loving home without hesitation.
  • Our vision is a world where EVERY person in EVERY community supports kids in foster care. Our mission is to love, encourage and support families that foster and children in foster care. We believe it is everyone’s responsibility to care for children when their parents cannot care for them. Volunteering, donating items, giving financially, and hosting donation drives are all ways the community can be a part of the mission.

How Can you Get Involved?

  • Family Room would not exist without the army of volunteers that make it happen! Weekly, monthly and quarterly opportunities are available for individuals or groups. Visit www.familyroomtriad.com for more information on how to become a volunteer.

Other Ways to Help

  • Monetary donations are how Family Room can be here for our community. A great way to help is by becoming a monthly sustainer. Any amount is helpful! We have sustainers that give $10 a month and sustainers that give $500 a month. All are helpful and make it possible for us to help every child who enters a new foster home. www.familyroomtriad.com/donations
  • Donations of items are always needed. We accept clean, quality new items like new baby, children, and teen items. Some items must pass a recall inspection and ALL items must be clean and ready for a child to use.
  • Donation drives of the new items families need are ALWAYS needed. New socks and underwear, diapers, wipes, baby, kid, and adult body wash, shampoo and lotion, toothbrushes, art supplies, etc, are all items we provide new when children enter a foster home.
  • Our donation drop-off location is 204 South Westgate Drive Suite C, Greensboro, NC 27407, every Tuesday from 9 AM – 7 PM and every Saturday from 9 AM – 1 PM
