New Programs and Exhibits at Kaleideum

By Guest Blogger Leigh Ann Woodruff

The New Year has brought new programs and exhibits to Kaleideum. If your family has not visited in a while, it’s time to check out the Museum at both of its locations (Kaleideum Downtown on Liberty Street in Winston-Salem, and Kaleideum North on Hanes Mill Road in Winston-Salem). There is so much fun to discover!

 Museums for All

As of January 1, 2018, Kaleideum has joined Museums for All, a signature access program of the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM) and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) that encourages families of all backgrounds to visit museums regularly and build lifelong museum habits. The program enables families to visit Kaleideum for a minimal fee of $3 per person upon presentation of an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card.

Through Museums for All, Kaleideum is partnering with museums across the country to make sure everyone can experience the best museums have to offer — all for the lowest and most-affordable prices ever. Visitors simply show their EBT card at the Welcome Desk when they arrive to receive Kaleideum’s lowest-priced admission.

Museums for All is part of Kaleideum’s broad commitment to seek, include, and welcome all members of the community. This program represents a long stride toward the goal of reaching more children and families with the valuable learning resources of museums while helping them build the skills for future success.

Ocean Bound Exhibit at Kaleideum North

Ocean Bound! gives visitors a breathtaking introduction to the majesty of the ocean. In this interactive exhibit, open through May 6 at Kaleideum North, visitors can pilot a giant “submersible” from mountain stream to the ocean, learn about more than 65 aquatic species and ecosystems, and guide “water” safely through a hazardous maze! Ocean Bound was developed by the Sciencenter and funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). It is locally sponsored by Winston-Salem/Forsyth County City/County Utilities and City of Winston-Salem Stormwater & Erosion Control.

Children’s China Exhibit at Kaleideum Downtown

Take an overseas adventure in Children’s China: Celebrating Culture, Character, and Confucius, open at Kaleideum Downtown through April 23. This interactive exhibit explores what life is like for young people in China through six different immersive environments. Children’s China is part of the Freeman Foundation Asian Culture Exhibit series, funded by the Freeman Foundation and administered by the Association of Children’s Museums. Created by The Magic House in partnership with the Confucius Institute at Webster University and Character Plus, Children’s China is a nationally traveling exhibit designed to increase understanding of the Chinese culture.
