Nutrition Made Easy

Trying to make better choices for your family while grocery shopping can be a hassle. Lowes Foods and the NuVal™ Nutritional System make it easy and quick!

As you’re shopping, how do you know that the foods you’re buying are the most nutritious choices for your family? Do you trust the manufacturer’s claims on the packages? Does “Low Fat” or “Reduced Fat” mean it’s better for you?

Lowes Foods is proud to introduce the NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System! The NuVal™ System considers all the information on the nutrition fact panel and ingredient list. NuVal™ Scores are powered by a sophisticated scientific algorithm that takes into account more than 30 nutrient and nutrition factors, in addition to their effects on health outcomes.

The NuVal™ score considers factors like carbohydrates, proteins and fat, trans fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sugar and sodium, as well as the quality of the nutrient. The net result is one number from 1-100: the higher the number, the better the nutrition!

It is time to spell “nutrition” with numbers instead of letters. Making a better choice is as easy as looking for the NuVal™ score on the shelf-tag, right next to the product price. Now you can compare overall nutrition the same way you compare value. No matter your starting point, NuVal™ will help you to trade up for health. Should you buy the wheat rolls or the multi-grain bread? Which salty snack is more nutritious for your family?

At Lowes Foods, there are approximately 13,000 items throughout the store that have NuVal™ scores. The majority of products in the store are scored and new scores are being added every month. Watch this video for more information.

The Science behind NuVal™

As obesity levels have skyrocketed during the past 2 decades, the need to provide simple nutritional guidance has become more important than ever. Dr. David Katz, the founder and director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center, recognized this need and assembled a team of nutrition and medical experts to develop the NuVal™ Nutritional Scoring System. The NuVal™ System was developed independently, without funding from food manufacturers or special interest groups.

NuVal™ is intended for use in making food choices. It is not a diet or substitute for a doctor’s advice about health conditions. NuVal™ Scores are based on nutrient data from laboratories, manufacturer recipes or on-pack nutrition information and ingredients. Visit www.lowesfoods.com/nutrition for more information.
