Rainy Day Activities in the Triad
Indoor activities for a rainy day in the Triad
Children thrive on time outdoors whenever the weather allows—fresh air, movement, and unstructured play are essential for healthy development. But when the rain rolls in, it can quickly disrupt those plans. Instead of solemnly singing “rain, rain, go away,” let’s have a game plan for gray days.
Fortunately, here in the Piedmont Triad—home to three vibrant cities and several charming surrounding towns—there’s no shortage of engaging indoor activities to keep kids active, learning, and having fun. We hope this curated list inspires your next rainy-day adventure.
visit a Children’s Museums
We have a full list of the children’s museums in the Triad. There are six in the Triad and seven more within a 1.5-hour drive! While children will obviously enjoy a dedicated children’s or science museum, the Triad has others worth exploring. Here are a few to add to your list:
• History buffs will enjoy the Old Salem Museums & Gardens, where indoor exhibits highlight life in the 18th century. Note that this does require a lot of walking outside so it’s not great for a rainy day!
• The Greensboro History Museum is free to visit and often hosts field trips so they know how to ensure kids enjoy themselves and learn something!
• International Civil Rights Center & Museum (Greensboro) – rich history in an indoor, climate‑controlled setting.
• Reynolda House Museum of American Art (Winston‑Salem) – historic and art‑filled.
• Witherspoon Art Museum (Greensboro) – smaller‑scale, museum + art gallery combo.
Visit The Public Library or a local Bookstore
The library is a good idea regardless of the weather. It’s easy to just go to the branch nearest you but on a rainy day make plans to seek out a new-to-you location. Most libraries in the Triad will have vastly different setups, play areas, storytimes and events, and be located near new cafes or lunch spots you may want to try out. Here are some of our resources for libraries and bookstores!

There are tons of indoor play center options in the Triad and across the state. We have a complete list by city in our regularly updated Guide to Indoor Playgrounds in North Carolina and our Triad Specific Indoor Adventure Parks Guide.
