Renovating Your Home with ICON

By Guest Bloggers Kathleen Kirk and Dave Meyer of ICON Custom Builders

Are you getting ready to start a home project? Are you overwhelmed? We are willing to bet you have some beautiful ideas pinned on Pinterest or maybe even Houzz.com, but do you know where to start?

Renovating your home can be a confusing and daunting task. Not only are you opening your wallet, but your home as well. You need people you can trust, that will listen to you ideas and guide you through the numerous decisions that even a small project can bring. So how do you get started?

icon2The first thing you need to do is select a licensed/bonded company that specializes in renovations. You need someone that understands remodeling – how to keep your existing space in tact, complete it in a timely manner, seamlessly blend your existing space with the new and be comfortable around your family.

The best way to find companies like this are by checking websites, going on local home tours (this is a great way to see completed projects and meet the builders in person) and by checking with neighbors, friends and family that have already been through this process. Who have they formed relationships with? Do they recommend them? Did they listen to them?

The second part of the process is to meet with your contractor for your initial appointment. Discuss your wants, needs and ideas.

Third, discuss costs for your options. You are paying for quality and experience. You are not hiring a contractor for this particular job, you are hiring them for everything they have done up until this point. Quality will beat anyone’s price.

icon3The next step is starting the job. This is when you are guided through the decision making process – cabinets, countertops, lighting, plumbing, paint colors, etc. This is where all your pins and pages can come to life.

After the selections are made, the work begins. It may be disruptive, but it is only temporary. Focus on the end product and before you know it, you and your family will be enjoying the new space.
