Santa Has A New Home This Year!

By Ragan F., President of Old Salem

When my children were younger, I used to take them to visit Santa Claus each year at the big department store in downtown Cleveland. It was an important family tradition during the holiday season, and they’d look forward to meeting him with eager anticipation. I can still remember the look of awe they gave Santa as they sat on his lap and told him what they wanted for Christmas. It’s always been a special memory for me as well as them. I bet a lot of you have wonderful memories of special visits with Santa from your childhood.

Those memories are a big part of what inspired us at Old Salem Museums & Gardens to start a new holiday tradition at our museum: Saturdays with St. Nicholas! Every Saturday from November 24 through December 22, you can bring your children to the Frank L. Horton Museum Center at Old Salem for fun activities and a chance for your kids to interact with St. Nicholas himself.

We’ve invited the St. Nicholas – a.k.a. Santa Claus – because he ties in with Moravian holiday traditions and, of course, Old Salem was founded by Moravians back in 1766.

We’ve planned numerous activities each Saturday, which will run from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., including a souvenir photo with the jolly old man (photo included in ticket price). In addition, you and your children can watch a puppet show called Sophie & the Gingercakes and listen to a storytelling of Twas the Night Before Christmas. You also can enjoy a holiday snack from Winkler Bakery, and there will be an opportunity for kids to shop for family and friends in a special holiday children’s shopping area!

It’s a great way for you to start a new holiday tradition for your family while enjoying the sights and sounds of Old Salem, which are full of the holiday spirit at this time of year.

Tickets to Saturdays with St. Nicholas cost $7 per person ages two and up. Children under two are free. Tickets can only be purchased at the Frank L. Horton Museum Center at 924 South Main Street in Old Salem. For more information, visit our website oldsalem.org, call 336-721-7300 or email info@oldsalem.org.

We look forward to hosting your family for this new holiday tradition with St. Nicholas here in Old Salem!
