A Taste of Italy in the Triad: Mario’s Pizza
By Guest Blogger Suzy Fielders
While there are many pizza joints in the Triad, there are very few authentic Italian ones that are family-owned and locally focused. Mario’s Pizza is just that though!
Do you know Mario’s Pizza history?
From Brooklyn to North Carolina
Brothers Vinny, Mario and Tony, are from and grew up in Brooklyn. They’ve always been in the food business. Thanks to their Italian origins they love and know a thing or two about making pizza!
They left Brooklyn in 1981 and moved to the North Carolina coast. It was then that they officially opened Mario’s Pizza! They had a store in Jacksonville Mall and one in Havelock. At that time they focused solely on pizza.
From then to now, they’ve always offered authentic Italian-style pizza. Their recipes even date back to their family over in Calabria, Italy. To this day, these classic, family Italian recipes are incorporated into their dough and sauce.
A few years after opening at the coast, the family decided to relocate to the Triad as they had an offer to open a Mario’s Pizza in a shopping center off Hanes Mall Boulevard. The Mario’s Pizza off Hanes Mall Boulevard was the first of the Triad. Today Mario’s Pizza has grown to eight locations throughout the Triad. They also started a chain called Tony’s Pizza with six locations in the Charlotte area.
Perfect Family Meals
Since their humble beginnings at the coast, Mario’s Pizza has grown not only in size but with their menu as well. In addition to pizza, they have pasta dishes, appetizers, desserts, wings, and even subs. There is something that everyone in the family will love!
They also have a great kid’s menu with each item under $5. Each option includes a kid’s sized drink. Kid’s menu options include a slice of either cheese or pepperoni pizza, ravioli, chicken fingers, cheese sticks, ziti, and spaghetti. Pasta dishes have the option of either tomato sauce or butter sauce.
All dough and sauce is made daily with local ingredients. They even have alternative diet options for their pizzas, including gluten-free crusts and vegan cheese.
To maintain that perfect family environment they also offer daily specials on their pizzas and entrées. They always strive to provide authentic pizza at an affordable costs.

First time at Mario’s Pizza- we ate at the Paladium location in High Point. Everything about this dining experience was excellent. The pizza: we got the bianco [white pizza]. This is very high quality cheese and crust with just the right amount of fresh garlic to render a great white pizza. Aside from the food, almost as important is the service. Yazmin is listed on the receipt as the server. This is self serve so she was at the register taking orders. And she guided my wife and me through our first Mario’s encounter with good nature and expertise. Two other items need mentioning. I ordered our pizza well done because nowadays it seems that restaurants don’t want to, or don’t know how to cook pizza. I often don’t get it the way I ask for it. Tonight it was cooked just how I wanted it. Besides the pizza we ordered fried zucchini [which we didn’t need.] I figured that it would all come piling out together because this is a self serve place. But they called us for the zucchini which we had time to eat before they called us for the pizza. And one more thing: I got a 20 oz. Blue Moon draft. Of course it was fresh and cold in a real glass but the kicker: only$3.90. This establishment is well run in every aspect from the hot, fresh, delicious food to the thoughtful and coordinated service.
I love Mario’s! My youngest daughter would not even eat pizza but once we took her to Mario’s, she decided she loved pizza. We took her to another pizza restaurant, only to discover she would only eat Mario’s. It was such a big deal we actually wrote Mario’s a letter to tell them about it. Best pizza ever!!!
