We’re On a Mission…Are You?
By Sarah Shelness and Adrienne Gillis
The Northwest NC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the CureĀ® invites you to join us on our mission: to save lives and eradicate breast cancer forever. The 14th annual Komen Northwest NC Race for the CureĀ® is on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Salem Academy and College in Winston-Salem, NC. Thousands will spend the first Saturday morning in May, LITERALLY taking another step closer toward finding a cure for breast cancer – We hope you will be one of them!!
The Komen Northwest NC Race for the CureĀ® is our Affiliate’s signature fundraising event. If youāve ever participated, you know that itās more than a fundraiser. Our Race is a remarkable event – an opportunity for our community to come together, united in the common goal to raise awareness and find the cures for breast cancer. A day where thousands of women, men, and their families ā running or walking ā help us spread the word about our mission!
How it began
It all started with a promise from one sister to another. Nancy Brinker promised her 33-year-old sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything within her power to find a cure for breast cancer. That promise is the foundation for the national organization known as Susan G. Komen for the CureĀ®, an organization that launched the global breast cancer movement. Komen for the CureĀ® has become the worldās largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. Thanks to the support of people like you, breast cancer survivors, their families and friends, Komen has grown into an international organization that has played a role in EVERY major breast cancer development since its inception in 1982.
Our focus is local
Even though Komen is a large organization with Races throughout the United States and even overseas, your fundraising efforts for the 14th annual Komen Northwest NC Race for the CureĀ® stays right here in our 11 county service area. Our Race is held each year in Winston-Salem, but the money raised is granted to life saving organizations throughout Alamance, Davie, Davidson, Forsyth, Guilford, Randolph, Rockingham, Surry, Stokes, Wilkes, and Yadkin counties. Seventy-five percent of all money raised through our Affiliate stays in those counties! Last year, our Affiliate granted $564,000 to organizations helping uninsured and underinsured local women. Every county in our service area was a grant recipient! These grants provide mammograms, screenings, and other diagnostic tests for those facing breast cancer, as well as sponsor breast health education and provide treatment support for survivors in the area.
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in women worldwide.Ā Our Affiliate has made increasing the screening rates a top priority: Mammograms have been touted as the single most effective screening tool to find breast cancer early. Since 1990, early detection and effective treatment have resulted in a 33% decline in breast cancer mortality in the United States. We hope that by providing funds to local programs that offer assistance in screening and early detection, we can make a difference right here in our community!
Helping is simple
The Northwest NC Race for the CureĀ® is our Affiliateās largest fundraising event. The easiest way to help us get the message out about breast cancer awareness is to join us on Race day – we would LOVE to share this special time with you! The Race will be Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Salem Academy and College. We have several ways you can participate – if you would like to be timed in our Race, you can register as a competitive runner and start 10 minutes before all other Race participants. If youāre more interested in coming out to support the cause with your friends and family in a relaxed way, you can sign up as a non-timed participant in the full 5K course or the scenic Salem College Mile.
Our Race is a family friendly event and we love to see supporters of all ages there on Race day! We do offer discounted rates for youth 6-15 and all children 5 and under are free. There is even a designated area in our Pavilion for Kids, the Chick-fil-A Kids Zone where children of all ages can participate in special events just for them, such as the Lyndhurst Kids Dash.
The Komen Northwest NC Race for the CureĀ® is more than just a race; it is an opportunity to help find the cures for breast cancer and show your support for survivors in our community! We hope to make a difference in the lives of local families and we need your help!!
