Kaleideum: Winston-Salem’s One and Only Children’s Museum (2026 Guide)

Heads up: if you’re picturing the old “visit two museums for one price” version of Kaleideum, that’s changed. Here’s what it looks like now.

For years, Kaleideum was actually two separate museums — Kaleideum Downtown (formerly The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem) and Kaleideum North (formerly SciWorks), about 10 minutes apart. One admission ticket got you into both, which made for a fun two-stop day. That’s no longer how it works.

In February 2024, Kaleideum consolidated everything into a single, four-floor museum in downtown Winston-Salem. The good news: nearly everything families loved about both old locations — the hands-on science, the planetarium, the climbing structures — got folded into this one building, so you’re not really losing anything. You’re just not driving to two different addresses anymore.

Where It Is Now

120 W. 3rd Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 — right in the heart of downtown, an easy pairing with lunch or a stroll through the West End Historic District.

What’s Inside (Floor by Floor)

First Floor — By Design: Patterns, coding stations, furniture design, and digital art inspired by scenes around Winston-Salem.

Second Floor — The Digital Dome & In Motion: This is where the old Kaleideum North planetarium lives now, reimagined as a state-of-the-art digital dome where you can explore the solar system or the human body. Next door, the In Motion exhibit lets kids engineer their own roller coasters and explore basic physics hands-on.

Third Floor — Storytelling, Our Nature & Wonders of Water: Shadow puppets and stop-motion animation, a nature space with live creatures and reading nooks, and a water exhibit exploring water’s three states.

Fourth Floor — Try-It Studio, Little Learners & Rooftop: Daily building challenges, a dedicated space for the littlest visitors, and rooftop access with climbing structures and skyline views — a nice callback to the old Kaleideum Downtown rooftop.

Good to Know

  • Because it’s all one building now, you can realistically do a full visit in 2–3 hours instead of splitting a day trip between two locations.
  • Members get in free with a membership card — worth it if you’re local and plan to visit more than twice a year.
  • Stroller and diaper-bag friendly, with a dedicated Little Learners space on the fourth floor for toddlers who aren’t ready for the bigger exhibits.
