Start your morning at Perennial Café, a charming Franklin Street favorite with cozy indoor seating and a welcoming outdoor patio. The café serves coffee made with beans roasted locally by Carrboro Coffee Roasters, along with house-made syrups, pastries, and a creative seasonal menu inspired by popular cocktails. Drinks such as the Franklin 75 and Cold Brew Sour bring the flavors and presentation of a craft cocktail to a completely alcohol-free morning treat. It is the kind of place that encourages you to slow down, try something unexpected, and savor the morning together.

Sunday Brunch at Crossroads Chapel Hill

If your visit includes Sunday morning, enjoy the brunch buffet at Crossroads Chapel Hill inside The Carolina Inn. Served from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the buffet features classic breakfast dishes, seasonal produce, assorted cheeses, pastries, and specialty brunch cocktails, as well as heartier lunch fare. The highlight for us was discovering that the grits came from The Old Mill of Guilford in Oak Ridge. It was such a fun surprise to see a Triad favorite represented on the menu! The elegant dining room and historic surroundings make Crossroads a lovely place to ease into the day.

A Midmorning Snack at Playa Bowls

For something naturally nutritious and refreshing, stop at Playa Bowls on East Franklin Street. Choose from colorful açaí, pitaya, coconut, and banana bowls topped with fresh fruit, granola, nut butter, and other add-ons, or grab a smoothie or juice to enjoy while exploring downtown. The bright, beach-inspired shop is conveniently located near the UNC campus and offers a lighter option between meals.

Lunch at Al’s Burger Shack

For a casual lunch, stop at Al’s Burger Shack on West Franklin Street. The burgers are made fresh to order with hand-pattied Black Angus beef, house-made sauces, and creative toppings. Popular choices include the Mookie with bacon-onion jam and roasted garlic aioli or the Kenny J (my pick!) with spicy pimento cheese, bacon, grilled onions, and Cheerwine barbecue sauce. Add pimento cheese-topped fries, sweet potato fries, or tater tots, then grab a seat on the patio and enjoy one of Chapel Hill’s favorite local burger spots.

Afternoon Tea at The Carolina Inn

For a slower afternoon, make time for Afternoon Tea at The Carolina Inn. This sweet, savory, and distinctly Southern tradition includes homemade scones with clotted cream and jam, treats created by the hotel’s pastry team, and a selection of loose-leaf English teas and herbal infusions. Served every Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m., it is a charming way to relax between exploring campus and heading out for the evening.

Reservations are required at least 48 hours in advance, and the suggested dress code is casual elegance or resort casual. We missed the dress-code note and arrived in shorts, so we would dress up a little more next time!

The menu includes curries, dosas, samosas, tandoori dishes, and plenty of vegetarian options. Choose a table in one of the cozy dining rooms or sit outside in the hidden courtyard, which feels like a peaceful escape from downtown.

For a more formal experience, Crossroads Chapel Hill offers a seasonal menu highlighting locally sourced ingredients and creative takes on classic Carolina flavors. The elegant dining room provides a sophisticated setting for a romantic dinner, especially convenient for those staying on-site.
